For my 1,000 'th post: a question for all

I love DU for keeping me informed over the years.

So here is my question: What was your first memory, earliest memory, when you realized that you loved someone or something ?... love of a person, piece of art, love of anything.

For me it is a strange memory. I was 2-3 years old and was in a playpen. My mom was cleaning and pushed the playpen up against a small table. I remember using my bottom teeth to gnaw on the table and I clearly remember thinking how delicious the table tasted, it was love .... I swear! My family still has the table, including the teeth marks. Now I know why I am so strange, LOL.

Maybe I’ll get there some day, we’ll see.

To answer your question...I was probably about four or five. My parents wee driving me home from somewhere, and I fell asleep in the car. I woke up in my bed, in my pajamas. I realized that my parents had carried me in from the car, changed my clothes and put me in bed without waking me. It might sound silly, but that made me feel protected and cared for. It was probably the first time I realized that I loved my family beyond the standard “they’re your family, you have to love them.”

with the boots turned backwards in the horse's stirrups. Kind of messed up for an earliest recollection. All my political education is formed of Republican misdeeds.

or 4 years old. The instructions were quite clear, keep quiet, if I wanted to sleep that was fine but no talking. Well, the movie had Margaret O'Brien in it and I was hooked. I thought she was absolutely wonderful and I decided I was going to be an actress too. I told everyone who asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, A MOVIE STAR!!!!!

We’d moved across town that summer and I didn’t know a soul in the new school. Our teacher Mrs. K, one of those “grandmotherly” type teachers (she was probably in her 40’s!) was the warmest and kindest person on Earth and made every kid feel welcome. That day she took us all outside (not at recess) to show us a wasp nest on the building, what it was, to be careful etc. She was always looking for things for us to learn, sometimes unscheduled. Over the years I didn’t always love school but I loved first grade.

I distinctly remember sitting on the back steps and watching/listening to the propeller driven planes fly over. For some reason the sound was comforting. Not so much about military as what the future might hold. They had a small garden and a lot of flowers. Many birds and bees.

I remember seeing my little teefie marks (LOL) on the edge of the drawer when I was older and Mom told me I did that!

These are such wonderful memories. Thank you all!

I can remember my great grandmother bringing me a spot the dog coloring book to my bed. I cried because I had an IV in my right hand and couldn't color. My grandmother put a crayon in my left hand and guided me. My first memory and one I'll never forget.

Thinking how wonderful it was to be 10 and just loving my life. I remember thinking I was no longer a young child and glad not to be an adult. I loved life as a ten yr old. I remember thinking a baby or an adult would not be up in this tree.
