The White House may try to block portions of Special Counsel Robert Muellers final report from being shared with Congress and the public in a fight that could end up before the Supreme Court.
Mueller may submit his findings on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign to the Justice Department as early as February, according to one U.S. official. After that, things could get messy.

Democrats who now control the House have said theyll demand that the department hand over the report -- and that they intend to make it public. The White House may counter by asserting executive privilege to prevent key findings from being turned over, according to people familiar with internal deliberations.
Under the federal regulation that authorizes special counsels, Mueller is required only to submit his report to department leaders. Theres no mandate that any part of Muellers findings be provided to Congress or the public.
What happens next would be decided by Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker or by William Barr, Trumps nominee for attorney general, if hes confirmed by the Senate by then. In the past, both have criticized Muellers investigation into whether anyone around Trump colluded in the Russian meddling and whether the president sought to obstruct the probe.

(3,344 posts)I realize this is an important topic but it just isn't relevant now. Why? Because the report is many months off and critical indictments will happen first. The indictments of Trump's family members and associates is going to blow the lid off this thing. The report will be secondary.
The media insists on making news on the report because Mueller's team doesn't leak. And they have nothing else to say.

(16,423 posts)The Grand Jury was just prolonged by 6 months.
Mueller has secured cooperation from the 3rd-row guys: Manafort, Gates, Flynn... Mueller has cooperation from the fucking CFO of the Trump Organization!!!
Next up are the 2nd-row guys: Kushner, Junior, Stone, Corsi, Wikileaks, possibly even Sessions. That will be Summer 2019. When Mueller goes from financial crimes to actual espionage, treason and conspiracy.
And once he has these guys in a headlock, by the end of 2019, it's time for the big one.
That's how prosecution actually works: That one gamechanging piece of crucial evidence that changes everything... In most cases that doesn't exist. In reality there are a dozen or dozens or hundreds pieces of evidence that form a big picture like puzzle-pieces, but only when combined.

(4,465 posts)Congress can subpoena Mueller to give his report by testifying in the open. This is what is the plan so the info WILL be made public.
