Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to leave his role in the coming weeks, multiple sources familiar with his plans told ABC News.
Rosenstein has communicated to President Donald Trump and White House officials his plan to depart the administration around the time William Barr, Trump's nominee for attorney general, would take office following a Senate confirmation.
Sources told ABC News Rosenstein wants to ensure a smooth transition to his successor and would accommodate the needs of Barr, should he be confirmed.
Rosenstein apparently had long been thinking he would serve about two years, and there was no indication that he was being forced out at this moment by the president.

(50,269 posts)1. This makes me wonder about any sealed indictments that might already be in place.
I can't imagine Rosenstein leaving and creating a threat to Mueller unless the puzzle was nearly completed.

but a lot has emerged about Barr since he was nominated. He might not sail through confirmation the way it was thought at first. Further, one or more Dem senators will extract a pledge of recusal based on his previous letter to DoJ and other statements biased against Mueller.

(6,355 posts)3. Securing a pledge and having him honor it are two different things.
The Saturday Night Massacre was due in large part to the pledge that Richardson made during his confirmation. There was no law requiring it, just his ethics. This administration has no ethics and is committed to the principle that if it ain't explicitly illegal, all's fair.
He'll make that pledge and then break it with the spin being "now that I've had a chance to review all the information (and share it with the president's lawyers), I don't see anything that requires recusal". When asked about his pledge..."I know much more about the details than I did when I made that pledge and with this new knowledge, I don't see a need for recusal".

CNN: Rod Rosenstein has signaled to officials that he would leave the job when he was satisfied that Muellers investigation was either complete or close enough to completion that it was protected.

signaled to officials that he would leave the job when he was satisfied that Muellers investigation was either complete or close enough to completion that it was protected, maybe that is why there was a recent rumor that Mueller was wrapping up and issuing a report in February?

(20,679 posts)9. Interesting sentence about Mueller
The deputy attorney general has been managing special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation and has signaled to other officials that he would leave when he was satisfied that Mueller's investigation was either complete or close enough to completion that it was protected.
