Durbin on WH meeting: Mitch McConnell didnt say a word at the meeting. Not a word, come to think of it, I dont think McCarthy did either.

McConnell, who had the president saw off the limb he had his caucus walk onto with the CR that they passed before the president abruptly decided not to support it, has his own re-election campaign in 2020. None of this helps him.

McConnells reelection bid is underplayed factor in shutdown drama. He doesnt want to risk having a GOP primary challenger perhaps goaded by Trump slam him for caving and thwarting the wall.

(26,306 posts)and thus are safe for a number of years from any blow back of bucking Trump and is trying to get enough of them to swing to voting an end to the shutdown while he will probably vote to let it continue.

(22,039 posts)They're too dense to sense which way the wind will blow.
Since they're both complicit in something with the Russians, they are wise to keep their traps shut.
My hope is that Robert Mueller exposes the extent of the corruption of the GOP by the Russians. If that were to happen, they'd all go down.
be the biggest scandal to rock DC. But then again the Repigs would be done... ..Finished.

(31,261 posts)traitors, selling out their country and all it's history for some insignificant reward. What they likely have done, at one time in our history, would get them lined up before a firing squad as dawn after they got convicted, but we don't do that type of barbaric conduct anymore.

(18,837 posts)...AND, if he feels his own re-election bid for 2020 is in jeopardy, the honeymoon will end abruptly. Mitch will NOT take one for Team Trump. He's too much of a seasoned career snake to let that happen.

(4,862 posts)GOP got their tax cuts and SCOTUS picks. McConnell stuck with Trump as long as Trump toed the GOP line. Now they are not aligned (I doubt he agrees with the shutdown) and 2018 elections sent up warming signs. IMO McConnell assumes Trump won't survive 2020. McConnell is thinking of his own skin

(16,936 posts)Yes, he knows that he'd be better off if he jumped ship now, but there's a bigger problem: money.
McTurtle has been in on the Russian money up to the balls. He knows where it came from, how it got here, and who got it, and he was one of the ones that helped deliver the goods.
He knows that if IQ45 goes down, he's going down too, as well as a whole bunch of other crooked Pugs!
I am SO loving watching all of that sweat rolling down their faces - the shit is about to hit the fan!

(21,960 posts)If he allows any vote to go ahead in the Senate, it will pass and then Trump will have to veto it or cave. Or it will pass with a veto-proof majority. Either way, if McConnell allows the vote then Trump loses, and if Trump loses you can bet that he will take ALL of his anger out on McConnell for betraying him. He will dump the ENTIRE blame for the fiasco on McConnell and rally his base to make sure they all know who was responsible for Trumps failure. Trump will certainly support a primary challenger to McConnell, who is up for re-election in 2020.
McConnell is a turtle holding a tiger by the tail. Sucks to be him! (lol)

(6,925 posts)Both closed. How else could McCarthy hear "... Trump asked, "if I open the government will you give any money for border security" She said "no". No".
He didn't hear them say no to border security, they aren't loose-lipped like liver-lips Trump.

(63,913 posts)found this article I will insert site:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/08/us/politics/donald-trump-speech.html
just a snip of what Lindsey said:
Allies of the president warned fellow Republicans to stand with Mr. Trump. If we undercut the president, thats the end of his presidency and the end of our party, Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, said on Fox News after the speech.
snip of what McConnell said:
Senate Democrats took to the floor on Tuesday to pressure Mr. McConnell and vowed to block consideration of other legislation until the government is reopened.
Mr. McConnell fired back, noting the 2006 legislation. Maybe the Democratic Party was for secure borders before they were against them, he said. Or maybe theyre just making it up as they go along. Or maybe they are that dead-set on opposing this particular president on any issue, for any reason, just for the sake of opposing him.
My opinion of what McConnell said he is up to his old ways of obstructing, this man is so guilty and he is so deep into it, I want to see him go down so badly.
