After Bush, conventional wisdom was to go with someone "safe and electable". Then came Obama.

Needless to say, we wasn't considered to be that by many. He beat two "electable" Republicans in sequence.

On the other hand, in 2016, Hillary was marketed as the "safe, electable and inevitable" candidate. She was beat by the most "unelectable" person to ever run for office.

"safe and electable" don't exactly have good track records in recent decades.
