Man needs leg amputation after Labrador Retriever shoots him.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/ex-lsu-players-leg-amputated-after-dog-shoots-him-his-pants-were-just-soaked-in-blood/ar-BBS0HRw?ocid=st

"At approximately 9:40 a.m., David Joe, David, Matt and I were all standing around the bed of the (Polaris) Ranger and Matt had laid his gun down flat in the bed of the Ranger and walked around on the passenger side to finish loading up," Heckford said. "I was at the tailgate no more than 4 feet away from him."

Seeing that the hunters were loading the vehicle, another hunting companion, a Labrador retriever named Tito, jumped in the bed of the Ranger. As he walked around finding a place to sit, he stepped on the safety of Branch's shotgun and pulled the trigger.

"The gun shot," Heckford said. "Everybody looked up. The first thing I saw was Matt and within two to three seconds he realized he was hit."

SNIP

"All of us have hunted for 20 years or more and none of us thought about that happening," Heckford said. "We were just moving 200 yards to set up and hunt.

"The opportunities for an accident are there and we just don't realize it. We think we're being safe, but are we? If there's a shell in that gun, anything can happen."

The dog did not shoot anyone.

An irresponsible gun owner, who should serve a minimum term, have all of his guns taken away and who should be disallowed from owning or using a gun in the future, caused this to happen.

though not intentionally, of course.

But where's your sense of humor?

As far as sentencing the gun owner to a minimal term -- he just lost his leg. Don't you think that was enough of a price to pay?

is always potentially dangerous.

This wouldn't have happened if he'd first unloaded the weapon before placing it in the truck.

Even so, it's a terrible thing to happen. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

People who irresponsibly handle firearms are a public menace, whether they harm themselves or others.

The notion of "the dog stepped on the safety and pulled the trigger" is simply stupid. There is NO, NONE, ZIP, ZERO, excuse for there to be chambered round.

Are you going to tell me that the dog cocked the gun and chambered that round? I don't fucking think so.

Whether someone hurts themselves in the commission of what should be an extremely illegal act is irrelevant. If a guy breaks his leg robbing a bank, he doesn't get a reduced sentence.

Fuck this guy. I don't see anything humorous about it. Someone losing a leg is not funny. My "sense of humor"? I don't think its funny that someone could have been killed, and that this guy lost a leg.

It is the absence of stiff penalties for mishandling firearms which produces these results.

And he's already paid a stiffer penalty than the minimal sentence you suggested.

Also, if you read the excerpt, you would see that the truth was dawning on the hunting party. All this time maybe they weren't as safe as they thought.

Yes, I know he's the same one who lost his leg. So what?

If I rob a bank, slip on the ice outside, break my neck and become paralyzed, we don't say "Oh, he's paralyzed, never mind about the law."

These people are a menace to society.

They are the ones who leave loaded guns lying around for kids to play with, etc.. There need to be stiff penalties for mishandling firearms.

I don't give a shit about his leg, he should never be allowed to handle a gun.

I'm still waiting to understand the "humorous" part of this story.

If he HAD injured somebody else, that would be a different situation entirely. Of course he should go to jail then.

I can't help you with the humor part. Either you understand and appreciate some dark humor, or you don't.

Okay, so, someone who drives drunk, at 100 mph, and ends up going off the road into a ditch and injuring themselves, should not be charged with any violation of law, because they only hurt themselves?

Is that an accurate reflection of your belief of the circumstances when a crime only involves harm to the criminal?

There isn't a law in that state saying you can't lay a loaded rifle with its safety engaged in the back of your truck that you are about to use while you are on your legal hunting trip.

What specific law are you saying he broke?

Does the word "should" mean anything to you in the following sentence, to which you had replied:

An irresponsible gun owner, who should serve a minimum term, have all of his guns taken away and who should be disallowed from owning or using a gun in the future, caused this to happen.

Perhaps it is me who is using it wrong. So for my future reference, what does the word "should" signal to you in that sentence?

Seems only fair.

Years ago I injured myself carelessly using a power tool and the most remarkable thing about it was how the family dogs cleaned up the mess. The trail of blood from the garage to the upstairs bathroom, gone!

They also kept offering me wound care afterwards.

Hey, take off those stupid bandages and let me lick that, it'll be better in no time!
