Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday that he's urged President Trump to open up the government for a short period of time so lawmakers can attempt to broker an end to the ongoing government shutdown, but was adamant that the president is "not going to give in" on his demands to fund a border wall.
Graham said on "Fox News Sunday" that he spoke with Trump on Sunday morning, when the president indicated an emergency declaration to construct his desired wall along the southern border is a last resort.
I would urge him to open up the government for a short period of time, like three weeks, before he pulls the plug on a legislative solution, Graham said.
Graham, who has said he would support Trump declaring an emergency, voiced frustrations that Democrats have in the past voted in favor of funding barriers along the border, but have refused to support Trump's wall.
"It really does perplex me how you expect this to end when you tell the president of the United States, 'you can't get ... $1 for a wall when in the past Democrats have appropriated billions for the wall,' " Graham said.
"Whats he supposed to do, just give in?" Graham added. "Hes not going to give in."

I believe they were willing to give Trump some money for the wall in exchange for DACA and Trump reneged. Why should we think he won't this time?

(15,001 posts)If, as Graham claims, Trump's not going to give in on the shutdown, then the ONLY way the shutdown ends EVER is by Congress passing bills regardless of what Trump wants including over-riding a veto if necessary.
The fact that he recognizes Trump is not going to budge means he knows the Senate needs to break with Trump for the shutdown ever to end. Every day he fails to do break with Trump is a day where the shutdown is his fault.

(11,885 posts)Has gotten him worried to the point he's doing anything he can to get trump to squash the finding against him for helping him , and putin. Keeping the government shutdown now will only make more republicans be voted out of office in 2020. They didn't learn from the Mid terms evidently. Graham's so screwed now.
