For me, the most astute observation she makes, is that Trump is terrified of death, and has long been convinced of an eventually nuclear war. Put those together and you quickly realize that he wouldn't hesitate to "take us all" along for that ride.

They don't see the future in a conventional way -- ie, that most people have a future. Pompeo and Pence invoke the rapture; Trump and Bolton want to use nukes; all are aware of climate change but don't seek to stop it. They act like an end-times cult and they want one-party rule.
Trump shares the sadism of the GOP. Where he departs is in the casual terror behind it.
In interviews with Trump going back decades, a recurring theme appears: we're going to die in a nuclear war. Today he has the means to control his fear -- by being the one to push the button.
Trump describes himself as a fatalist, and I get that. I get not seeing the world as good, and assuming people will act terribly if they can, and watching your back.
But I can't grasp wanting this, or enjoying it, and I can't fathom the emptiness and lovelessness of his life.
Trump's view of the inherent disposability of human life is extraordinarily useful to a GOP already run like an unchecked sadistic cult.
As I said last year, "If Trump fears he will have to make a personal sacrifice, he will sacrifice the world instead."

(53,841 posts)I have to think that the military, having been observing trump over the the last two years, and being clued in by Mattis and intel agencies, won't automatically honor his call to launch nukes.
They know he's nuts and have to have installed contingency plans.

(22,779 posts)It gives him too much credit for actually being a thinker. The president is an idiot. There's no deep thinking going on in that noggin, at all. For sure it's the politics of fear that sucks the desperate in and down the rabbit hole. He slings words around like bones to a dog. Nothing has deep meaning to him but his own reflection, as shallow as that is, and no doubt, he thinks he's gorgeous and invincible. Most of the black comedy we are living in now is being micromanaged by his handlers and cronies, like Mitchell and Steven. The president is, was and will always be a "useful" idiot and a deeply disturbed sociopath.
