Should I be concerned over buying lettuce in the grocery store?

Now that we don't have any food inspectors on the job?

I eat salads for lunch 3-4 times a week. Should I hold off on buying lettuce greens until the food inspectors go back to work?

anyhow. Probably your risk is no greater now than before.

These days, I'm a little hesitant to buy romaine, but then, I don't really like romaine lettuce that much anyhow. I prefer other varieties.

bacterial contaminants reported by state public health labs to identify multi-state outbreaks as early as possible and to allow for identification and potential recall. This function is severely hampered right now.

But how many will die from the flu this month? How many die from stranger shootings? We still go out in public. The odds from dying from eating contaminated lettuce during any given month are less than one in a million, even during this shutdown. I agree that the odds, relatively speaking, keep going up fast as long as the CDC is prevented from doing its job properly.

of major public health import. That includes international outbreaks that can readily end up here. Federal labs participate in the World Health Organization's efforts to monitor emerging disease of all kinds and that is critical.

Don't diminish how important this is--including foodborne infections that can and have proven deadly on a wide scale. To do so, is quite foolish.

Quite frankly now would be an ideal time for someone with terrorist intent to intentionally contaminate aspects of our food supply--or animal feed. Both would have tremendous consequences. To underestimate the risk and our vulnerabilities is quite foolish.

During the IRA bombing campaign in London, Londoners continued to take the tube. That doesn't mean they didn't think the threat was real. I was only giving an opinion, since we were asked, as to whether it was time to give up eating lettuce. Government exists for a reason, and I support it. I want the protections it provides us all. Any risk that can be reduced, any lives that can be saved, should be.

Cross your fingers.

You can also make salads out of other greens besides lettuce. Try shredded Brussels Sprouts.

Slice apples and carrots into matchstick pieces. Add thinly sliced celery, red onion and diced red bell pepper. Toss with apple cider vinaigrette.

We call this one “apple slaw”. My son loves it. Also good on pulled pork sandwich.

I got a lot of salad recipes. I love salad.

I still have kale in the garden. I’m growing baby lettuce/mustard/chard/other greens in my basement under lights. I’ll start more in late February outside under cover in the garden.

I’m just sick of the recalls of that particular food group.

Also, the highways are much more dangerous since trucking is Federally regulated and the truck inspections aren't happening.
