The headline reads 'trump denies working for russia.'"

denied that he worked for Russia, and he called FBI officials who launched a counterintelligence investigation to determine whether he did “known scoundrels” and “dirty cops.”

Trump’s comments to reporters as he left the White House came in response to reports that an FBI investigation that was opened after Trump fired then-Director James B. Comey in May 2017 included a component to determine whether the president was seeking to help Russia.

“I never worked for Russia,” Trump said as he prepared to leave for an event in New Orleans, adding: “Not only did I never work for Russia, I think it’s a disgrace that you even asked that question because it’s a whole big fat hoax. It’s just a hoax.

1. Reminds me of a (possibly apocryphal) story about Lyndon Johnson:

This was said to have taken place during one of his early campaigns. Johnson was getting worried because his opponent was closing in, so he he told his campaign manager to start a rumor campaign about his opponent’s life-long habit of sex with farm animals.

“We can’t get away with calling him a pig-fucker,” the campaign manager protested. “Nobody’s going to believe a thing like that.”

“I know,” Johnson replied. “But let’s make the sonofabitch deny it.”

The difference in this case is that Trump actually was (and is) working for Russia, which is even worse than having his way with livestock. But it's just delightful to see him have to try to deny it, and to see the denial on the front page of a major newspaper. It also reminds me of that time when Nixon said he wasn't a crook.
