Gillette takes on toxic masculinity in new ad campaign

A new ad campaign from Procter & Gamble-owned razor brand Gillette is taking on toxic masculinity and calling on men to take action against sexual harassment and bullying.

The digital ad, titled “We Believe,” puts a twist on Gillette’s decades-old slogan, “The Best a Man Can Get.”

It addresses issues of harassment, bullying and men’s mental health, asking: “Is this the best a man can get?”

“We believe in the best in men. To say the right thing, to act the right way,” a narrator says over clips, both scripted and real, of men defending others from bullying or stopping friends from harassing women.

“The boys watching today will be the men of tomorrow,” the narrator says.

It showed a man (not in drag, btw) in spandex capris with super high heels on a dance floor!

I was impressed.

I tried to do a quick Google search for it just now, but couldn't find it.

Glad to see ads acknowledging different brands of masculinity in positive terms.

Bad behavior has no gender. Adding racial or gender qualifiers to bad behavior only creates division. Youtube likes/dislike numbers bear this out. A lot of people don't appreciate being lectured to on moral issues from multinational corporations and Hollywood elites.

The ad does the opposite of it's intended goal. It is not bringing people together. It is alienating the very people it is trying reach.

having issues.

The men it's trying to reach are those who respect women, but are afraid to confront other men on their toxic masculinity.

It never intended to appeal to those men who are clueless to their own toxic masculinity.

Those men are demonstrating to everyone else, with their responses, just how systemic toxic masculinity is.

Wed Jan 16, 2019, 06:53 PM
Jan 2019

Did it achieve that goal? No it did not. It failed. Virtue signaling is not a substitute for an effective program. I see this happening more and more in business and politics. An entity puts out a failed product or service then blames the consumer for not embracing it rather than taking responsibility for it's failure. Shaming consumers or voters is not a valid marketing strategy. It's never worked and it never will.

Annoying incels and MRA's does nothing to help women facing discrimination. It makes it worse. If the goal is to feed your ego and feel superior to basement dwelling man babies who can't get laid it was a success. If your goal is to make women feel safe and end discrimination it is a failure.

It sounds very dismissive of people who like the message, like they are being had because they think it's powerful.

The same apply to those who were moved by these ads as well?

Jose Andres prepared free meals in Puerto Rico after the Hurricane, and now for furloughed feds. Is that simply crass marketing to increase the sales at his restaurants? Or is there a dollop of actual philanthropy in there somewhere, and should we dismiss the good he is doing?
