What do you think will be the ultimate outcome of the Mueller investigation?

Jonathan Karl from ABC said over the weekend that his sources say the Mueller report will be anticlimactic. This can be taken two ways: It will be anticlimactic because Mueller didn't find anything, or it will be anticlimactic because everybody's already heard most of the bad things.

In any event, it got me thinking about how these big political scandals tend to play out. We all thought that Fitzmas was going to imprison Dick Chaney for outing Valerie Plame—didn't happen. We thought the Iran-Contra scandal was going to cause Reagan to be impeached—didn't happen. On the other side, I talked to conservatives who were positive that Benghazi was going to bring down Hilary Clinton—didn't happen. Do we all get our hopes up unrealistically?

Is the Trump-Russia scandal different? It seems to be. I'm curious how everyone thinks this will ultimately play out.

2. I suspect it'll be another Fitzmas

I've long suspected that there would never be a direct connection to Trump personally. For one thing, the Russians probably knew he was to much of an idiot to get too involved with him directly. Any campaign connection is going to be blamed entirely upon those individuals who did the deeds. Trump will be held blameless.

The one strange place is that Jared and Don Jr. seem neck deep in all of this and it would seem they were fairly exposed to indictment.

5. I think trump himself is 'fairly exposed to indictment.'

It may be just that Mueller has more work to do, and it will take more work for the rw political climate to change more - before trump gets more directly censured/gets impeached by the House, indicted, etc.

[My sense is that many people who have not been directly hurt by trump, while they may be somewhat aware that trump is incompetent and/or corrupt,- still, they just don't feel very involved in the 'situation]'.

12. I wonder if being a "Useful Idiot" falls under high crimes and misdemeanors?

If trump is unwittingly helping Russia, he should be impeached, but I don't think the framers of the Constitution ever imagined our country would have to deal with someone like that.

13. Depends upon what the "idiot" does

A useful idiot can still do illegal things, he may just not understand why he is being asked to do it. Think of the person that thinks they're smuggling drugs, when it is really putting a bomb on a plane. Trump may have laundered money, thinking he was just being clever and getting around banking restrictions.

harder to pull off, - in this pervasive, intensive/extensive, media environment. Also, the level of traitortrump's very apparent criminality, is so huge compared to ReaganHood's 1 treason count, or Nixon's comparatively minor criminality.

This battle for law against trump, may well get even bloodier and worse - but imo, traitortrump will go down big.

Saying the same thing. He sounded like a conservative the way he talked.

So many people have been able to handle Trump only because of hope of the investigation. If it goes no where I think many will be out in the streets. I see arguments getting even worse between left and right.

7. Something carefully worded that multiple criminal indictments are warranted

At a Federal level on election fraud, obstruction, and RICO, including most of his inner circle

Internationally for criminal money laundering

A few more criminal referrals to other jurisdictions along the way

All putting the President at the center of the criminal activity. That's the keystone, intentional, flagrant, knowingly criminal acts, with no pretense at deniability, that I expect

Figure the odds are even on him being named a co-conspirator at this point

I expect him to go kicking and screaming, but I expect him to go nonetheless

At best, we've got the payments to the two "ladies" campaign finance stuff.

And that's iffy, given it's not illegal to make payments for a legit non-campaign related purpose (e.g, not letting trophy-wife know about your zipper issue).

But that will be, at least, fun to watch.

If there was a conspiracy or actual crime between and betwix Russia and Trump to do something (like illegally release emails), that'd be out.

What will come out is a sternly worded letter that Trump has a big mouth and publicly encouraged Russia to commit crimes, which is creepy and unethical, but not illegal. Also something we already know.
