General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe very first thing a president is, even this one, is a PUBLIC servant. NO president has the RIGHT
to engage in secret meetings with foreign leaders, or anybody else for that matter. At the very least cabinet officials must be present at all times (and in this case family members dont count). The president is a public servant. He asked for, ran for and was sworn to an oath for the highest office we have in the United States.
No one forced him to be president (at least we have no evidence yet that Putin required trump to run). He has no right to endanger us in this fashion. Thats what secrets do, they threaten, they are a threat.
In this case trumps secret meeting with Putin is totally without precedent, incredibly dangerous, and anti American. Not just un american...anti American. That he took away the translators notes STRONGLY suggests that what he discussed with Putin was at least illegal, probably criminal if not treasonous. Its highly likely that Putin has tape recordings of the conversation. So Russia knows what was discussed.
The translator may well be called before Congress to testify about the secret conversation. That person may or may not remember verbatim the details of the conversation, but they will certainly remember the sense of what was discussed and some quotes will stand out. That trump took the notes must have put the translator on guard and they may well have attempted to recreate the conversation as soon as they reasonably could. These are highly educated people and not robots who forget or can have their memories wiped.
That we have come to this state in our national condition...a president validly suspected of being an agent of Russia, investigated by our FBI and the target of a criminal investigation by the special counsel seems way beyond some crazy spy thriller. Even Tom Clancy couldnt have come up with this lunacy we are experiencing.
As a side note: I hope the translator has FBI security around the clock.

(15,751 posts)Benjamin Franklin, a favorite of mine, refused a patent on the Franklin Stove as a public servant - desiring that many might benefit from the stove. A real 'public servant'.
Hard to imagine anyone much more opposite of trump than Franklin - self made fortune, brilliant, generous, witty, man of the ages, ahead of his time, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.,

(5,106 posts)I KNOW it bothered ME, and I didn't see why it was mostly just reported matter-of-factly at the time it was announced. Trump and Putin one-on-one with no witnesses except the translators? WTF?
