anti gay bigots because most politicians opposed marriage equality. Congresswoman Gabbard, as a State Representative, not only opposed both marriage equality and civil unions which very few Democrats did, she also favored amending both the Hawaiian and the US Constitutions to ban both marriage equality and civil unions (only 2 Democratic senators voted for it Byrd and Nelson of NE), she also called people who advocated for even civil unions homosexual extremists, and blamed negative press coverage of her on homosexual extremists. It would be extremely difficult to find any other Democrats engaging in that behavior in 2004. Gabbard was exceptionally anti gay and was that as a 22 year old state representative, not a teenager who lived under her father's roof.
Yes, marriage equality, was opposed by nearly every elected official but virtually no elected Democratic official was as off the charts anti gay as Gabbard. For straight people to tell us we can't hold her accountable for this is plain straight privilege.

(1,975 posts)always said it was stupid to allow any church to deny marriage to a couple already married in their own eyes. Same applies to government. Period.
My mom's stylist was married to his partner for 45 years before the first legislation came about to allow them to do it "legally".
I wouldn't spit in Gabbard's direction if she was on fire.

Tulsi Gabbard's LGBTQ Views Have Reportedly Changed Over Time But Many Say That's Not Enough
snip//
"Earlier in Gabbard's career, Jacobin reported that she was anti-choice and in favor of a constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between a man and a woman. She also argued that Democrats "should be representing the views of the people, not a small number of homosexual extremists," per Jacobin.

This shift in her views, however, was not enough to earn her an endorsement from Hawaii's LGBT Caucus. According to Maui Time Weekly, the caucus did not endorse Gabbard in her 2016 Congressional race, arguing that Gabbard still personally opposed same-sex marriage even if she abstained from taking political action on it. The caucus cited a 2015 interview that Gabbard had done with Ozy, in which she stated that she did not want to emulate a theocratic government imposing its will on its people.

I've also read her personal feelings haven't changed.. she's just not going to go about trying to change our laws.

(3,259 posts)First, WTF? Her past words and actions fall in-line with some of the most horrific Republicans. The straight up promotion of hate that leads to not only oppression, but deaths as well.
Second, the grassroots movement to change minds and educate in this area is one of the most impressive movements this country has ever seen. I think people who change should be held in high regard. But Gabbard has comments on record that seem to show she didn't change her views on the issue, just governments role. It's my understanding she holds many of her old views to this day.
No pass can be given. It's not just about what she has said. It's also about the reason she has given as to why she legislates in a different manner than she once did.

(109,000 posts)So her heart hasn't changed. Just her politics.
The quote below is from an article dated Sept. 27, 2015.

Fittingly for her narrative, though, the explanation for her changed ideology feints us back onto familiar territorythe military, states the article. It was, she says, the days in the Middle East that taught her the dangers of a theocratic government imposing its will on the people. (She tells me that, no, her personal views havent changed, but she doesnt figure its her job to do as the Iraqis did and force her own beliefs on others.)
So after all this time, Gabbard still personally opposes same-sex marriage, but wont say or do anything politically about it? This puts her campaign statement on same-sex marriage that we cited above in an entirely different light.
