The time Julian Castro did business with Trump -- and quickly regretted it

The former San Antonio councilman voted for hundreds of thousands in subsidies to land a beauty pageant.

By ALEX THOMPSON 01/15/2019 05:03 AM EST

On Saturday, Julián Castro announced he wants Donald Trump’s job. Back in 2002, he wanted Trump’s business.

As a San Antonio City Council member in his late 20s, Castro voted to give $600,000 in taxpayer subsidies to land Trump’s Miss USA beauty pageant — a move that delighted the business mogul at the time and would undoubtedly do so again if Castro gains traction in the Democratic presidential primary.

“I had many people who wanted [the pageant], and San Antonio did a great job taking it away from other cities," Trump told the San Antonio Express-News at the time, adding later: “I usually end up investing wherever I go. You got to do something with the money, right?”

Mayor Ed Garza, who met with Trump personally and worked hard to land the event, argued it was a “sound investment for the media exposure.”

But Castro would soon wonder if he made a mistake in voting to fork over serious taxpayer cash for the event, which was approved in a unanimous vote.

is that he was for him before being against him. Giving incentives to bring an event to your area does not mean you are for the person at the top of the organization. That really is simpleton thinking.

An argument can be made that Castro should have known better. I think that is a bit of a stretch. But making the case that Castro was supportive of Trump for working hard to land the even, which is directly insinuated in the article, is a stretch that is not possible to make. This is Republican propaganda aimed at Democrats.

They couldn't report the truth if it presented itself wrapped in facts.
