Santorum’s below-the-belt shot at black people

from Colbert King at WaPo: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/post/santorums-below-the-belt-shot-at-black-people/2012/01/03/gIQARQlAZP_blog.html

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum (R) should enjoy his showing tonight in the Iowa caucuses and the bounce he might get out of placing among the top-tier finishers. He might even get a kick out of the stories that hail him as some come-from-behind genius, the type that comes along once in a lifetime. Yuck, yuck . . .

His campaign stop in Sioux City on Sunday laid the groundwork for the response he will get, in the unlikely event that he emerges as the GOP nominee. He used the forum to take a below-the-belt blow at black people, telling his mostly white audience that, when it comes to entitlements, he doesn’t want to “make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money.”

Of course, Santorum was pandering to a group that he thought would like that racial slur, which was based upon a false stereotype. Would he have said that to a gathering of the NAACP?

. . . No, Santorum was firmly placing himself in the camp of the Republican right wing who, down through the years, have made it their business to denigrate African Americans as shiftless takers from God-fearing, hard-working white folks.

Guess what, Rick? Some of us can read. And we and our friends will remember. We are waiting our turn.

Or is that something Sharpton read into it, and then King picked up on what Sharpton said? Where is the actual quote from Santorum?

Here's what the Daily Howler says was on the tape.

"SANTORUM (videotape): What President Obama wants to do, his economic plan is to make more people dependent upon the government, to grow the government to make sure that we have more food stamps and more SSI and more Medicaid. Four in 10 children now are on government-provided health care.

It just keeps expanding. They are just pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That’s what the bottom line is.

I don’t want to make people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families. "

No mention of black at all.

It looks to me like Sharpton and King are playing us for fools.

"Videos posted on several websites show Santorum discussing programs such as Medicaid and food stamps, then saying: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.""
