As we all know, the New York times recently reported that the FBI opened an investigation as to whether the president was actually a serving as an agent of Russia.

(7,876 posts)Presumably the information about the FBI counterintelligence investigation into Trump being opened and passed off to the Mueller team came from an FBI/DOJ informant -- not anyone on Mueller's team.

(14,249 posts)As others have noted, the counterintelligence investigation was dolded into the Mueller probe. But perhaps more important, counterintelligence vestigations don't always conclude in the same way criminal investigations do.
"The F.B.I. conducts two types of inquiries, criminal and counterintelligence investigations. Unlike criminal investigations, which are typically aimed at solving a crime and can result in arrests and convictions, counterintelligence inquiries are generally fact-finding missions to understand what a foreign power is doing and to stop any anti-American activity, like thefts of United States government secrets or covert efforts to influence policy. In most cases, the investigations are carried out quietly, sometimes for years. Often, they result in no arrests."
