The word turkey has been used to refer to land occupied by the Turks since the 1300s and was even used by Chaucer in The Book of the Duchess. The word Turk is of unknown origin, but its used in such varying languages as Italian, Arabic, Persian, and many others to refer to people from this region. The land occupied by the Turks was known as the Ottoman Empire from the 1300s until 1922.

To understand this, we have to get to know another bird: the guinea fowl. This bird bears some resemblance to the American turkey. The guinea fowl is actually native to eastern Africa and was imported to Europe through the Ottoman Empire.
Ah, we are seeing a connection! Once imported, Europeans came to call the guinea fowl the turkey-cock or turkey-hen, because the bird came from the Turks. When settlers in the New World began to send similar-looking fowl back to Europe, they, out of familiarity, called them turkeys.
But, every language seems to have radically different names for this bird, and so Turkey the nation is definitely the first and correct usage of the word.

(54,415 posts)My elder daughter is still pondering he choice for a wedding dress. She is working in New York City, and is there now, but the wedding will be in August at some castle in the Taunus (sort of a German Vermont) that her sister picked out. My wife is helping our younger daughter with baby sitting down in Königstein, outside of Frankfurt, as the father is off skiing in Georgia (as in Tbilisi, not as in Atlanta). I am staying with my brother here in Northern Virginia for a few days, although I was over in DC on Friday catching up on a few things with a few friends. There is some old family to visit Saturday and then Sunday brunch with a friend who was an Assistant Chief Counsel during the Watergate hearings 45 years ago--ready for a few parallels?

(63,221 posts)You will have to post wedding pics when the big day comes. And pics of your wife, younger daughter and baby too! Would also love to hear what your friend says at Sunday brunch! Keep us posted!
Thanks! Good to hear from you!

(54,415 posts)Most of my friends are still working, even the ones in their mid seventies, and most of my conversations are "off-the-record," unless they say "and you can quote me on that!" They rarely do, of course.
I'll re-tell something that happened nearly 11 years ago, I've posted it before.
I was up in Cape Cod, waiting to go to the Democratic Convention in Denver. That evening Obama had promised to announce his pick for VP. Speculation was all over the place, including on DU. In northern Virginia, my nephew used to swim competitively, and his mom used to drop him off at an indoor pool at 6 AM to practice. My brother's wife is from Japan, and my nephew was somewhat small for his age (then 18), somewhat shy, and has very strong Oriental features. Besides him, there were only two other people at the pool at that hour. They happened to be staffers of Senator Joe Biden. They saw what they thought was a young oriental kid who "obviously" understood no English, so they were excitedly jabbering away about Biden having been chosen by Obama. My nephew, whose English was native, was interning for the DC office of the Texas Democrats that summer, and soaked up every word, which he then related to me an hour later.
Now I knew how fast both news and rumors were spreading in those days, and I didn't think it was fair to get Biden's staffers in trouble, so I put it out on DU, refusing to name my source, and got promptly thrashed with angry demands for "LINK?!?!" interspersed with posts about how I was just spouting BS and really couldn't know any more than anyone else. Well, yes, I could, and one poster (count 'em--ONE) even apologized after the announcement was made.
So these days, unless it concerns an attack on someone to whom I have a personal connection, I try to refrain from using information from a source I can't publicly name. It makes for less abuse and more fun reading this board!

(54,415 posts)"Get a Life" can't be enforced in a court of law, and some people reject the notion outright to begin with. "I have every right to be angry with the world, and with you in particular, so deal with it!" You know the type, I'm sure.
