One of the stupid things we do in politics is assume we have an entire demographic on our side based on a single issue.

Assuming we would get 100% of the Hispanic and woman vote in 2016 was a ridiculous miscalculation. Many women are anti-choice. Many Hispanics are almost as nuts about illegal immigration as Drumpf is.
Headlines like "Women are angry" are completely misleading to the mathematical realities.

Yes, about half of women are angry. But the other half are actively working against us, as has been the case for all of history. Having a woman at the top of the 2016 ticket really didn't change those dynamics at all.

So what's the plan for getting the other half to agree with us?

Only about 55% of the voting age population voted in 2016. Trump only got 46% of those votes. So Trump only got about 25% (= 46% of 55%) of the voting age population. And they weren't all women: crudely estimated, only about half of them were women, which means maybe 13% of women voted for Trump

And white women who voted for Trump have been dropping in their support for him.

So we need to start with accurate metrics, to be effective.

Many say "Democrats failed" because HRC didn't get 100% of women, because Trump is so alpha male and sexist, we think no woman should have liked him. But we know that women who draw their power from the men that they align with will indeed support the candidate that their man believes is best for him. That's more endemic among young women who are still vulnerable to the societal message that women draw worth from their appeal to men.

However, for some that vision of their worth endures past their early 20s. Particularly those who don't go to college, and evangelicals.

Abortion is a HUGE issue for them. Along with anything labeled "socialist." Any threat to the supremacy of men, like not having their children, or sharing leadership or resources with powerful women is a red flag for them.

That's not wholly a democratic party issue, that's a cultural issue. When women believe in their own worth, and they are empowered by education/training to be independent, their world view broadens.

It’s been going on for as long as I remember, but one day while conversing with a conservative neighbor, I realized what I’d been pushing aside for years. He was mansplaining like most old white guys do to people they perceive to be their inferiors, which is pretty much everyone, but especially women.

They talk down to women, and behave as if they need to explain the world to us, and I was pretending to be interested about shit I and most people already know out of politeness. I’d been unconsciously enabling them and that had to stop, because it’s turned too many of them into smug, arrogant, insufferable dickheads.

And this is why so many of them flock to Trump. He is one of the worst examples of what happens when you defer to and coddle someone simply because they are white, male and wealthy. This is also why they are scared shitless of AOC. She kneecaps the mansplainers and doesn’t play dumb like so many women of my generation were encouraged to do in order to not frighten off “eligible” men. Her generation isn’t having it.
