'We will not be silenced': A meaningful march days after Trump joked about a Native American massacr

When we tally the final cost of the government shutdown — whenever that may come — there will be plenty of concerning numbers. Unpaid wages. Lost revenue to businesses. The amount of canned goods given out at food banks to government workers who never should have been forced to visit them.

Here’s another number: 56,768.

That’s the number of people who attended the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington last January, a month that officials say is usually busy for the museum.

That’s the number of people who, in a single month, walked out of a building in the nation’s capital knowing more about Native Americans than when they walked in.

That’s the number of people, or as close to any estimate that is available, who won’t get that same opportunity this month if the government shutdown lasts much longer.

This matters because American Indians remain one of the most vulnerable groups in this country, and the cost of ignorance about them is already too high. Just look at this past week. It began with President Trump joking about a Native American massacre and ended with a crowd of people attending the Indigenous Peoples March in the nation’s capital, hoping to be seen and heard....

The Native American elder that MAGA racists mocked is Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips. He holds a regular ceremony for Native American veterans buried at Arlington.

Those MAGAt children reflect their own elders. They embarass us all by their treatment of Nathan Phillips.

I'd like to think the school will take some disciplinary action, but I also keep hoping that trump* will get beamed up by his mother ship.

Being a catholic school is appalling on so many levels. Do they not teach them the teachings of Jesus.

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
