This Veteran put his life on the line for our country. The students’ display of blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance is a signal of how common decency has decayed under this administration. Heartbreaking.

Haaland to Speak at Indigenous People’s March
January 18, 2019 Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At 2 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. MT today, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01), one of the first Native American women serving in Congress, will speak at the Indigenous People’s March at the Lincoln Memorial. The Indigenous People’s March serves as a platform to raise awareness about the issues facing men, women, and children in Indian Country.

For the few readers who might be unfamiliar with this racist incident; here's an article from the Washington Post:
‘It was getting ugly’: Native American drummer speaks on the MAGA-hat wearing teens who surrounded him
By Antonio Olivo ,
Cleve R. Wootson Jr. and
Joe Heim
January 19 at 6:16 PM

The images in a series of videos that went viral on social media Saturday showed a tense scene near the Lincoln Memorial.

In them, a Native American man steadily beats his drum at the tail end of Friday’s Indigenous Peoples March while singing a song of unity for indigenous people to “be strong” in the face of the ravages of colonialism that now include police brutality, poor access to health care and the ill effects of climate change on reservations.

Surrounding him are a throng of young, mostly white teenage boys, several wearing Make America Great Again caps, with one standing about a foot from the drummer’s face also wearing a relentless smirk.

The encounter generated a wave of outrage on social media less than a week after President Trump made light of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre of several hundred Lakota Indians by the U.S. Cavalry in a tweet that was meant to mock Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D), who Trump derisively calls “Pocahontas.”

BTW, the school and the The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington have responded.

Laura Keener, of the diocese, released the following statement:

"We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

"The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion. We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement."

I hope that punk trying to intimidate Mr. Phillips is put into a room with a nun armed with a 12" wooden ruler!

This incident? As if their were two sides to this attack?

Just apologize, count your rosaries and tithes, and get on with your god's Business - making money.

They put ALL the blame on kids? Where is the firing of chaperones and adults who allowed this behavior on their watch? This is a cheap apology and totally ignores the problem,. The kids are assholes, but young assholes. Schools are supposed to teach children how to not be an asshole.

This school failed, no apology can change what we witnessed.

Rep. Deb Halland (D-N.M.), who with Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kan.) became the first Native American women elected to Congress last fall, said the video was difficult to watch.

“To see a group of students from a Catholic school who are practicing such intolerance is a sad sight for me,” Halland said.

To say nothing about Calvinists, evangelical protestants, etc.

For all the supposed basis in a meek carpenter from Nazarene, most of the opportunists that followed have made xianity a hatred-filled and definitely not a turn-your-cheek religion. Not sure any religion is really gentle.

50. Covington Catholic

As a graduate of CCH class of 73 I applaud Matthew and I signed his petition.Hopefully it will not fall on deaf ears. A reminder to everyone Covington is in a congressional district that is redder than red, with a few blue spots in Covington. Covington Catholic gets most of its boys from the suburbs which are heavily red. The point being they get this stuff from home, supporting this lying bastard, and reinforced at school. It is a different high school than I went to, it was a bit more urban and the teachers the brothers and priest were accused, with good reason of being too liberal.

As Teflon Don and Republican continue to operate above the law with reckless disregard for human suffering that they cause in many cases, we will be meeting an increasing number of Christians here at D.U. In fact, many Hispanics - here in New Mexico - are Catholics. Like ANY other religious group, these people are guaranteed the right to worship under the US Constitution. After the tRump/ Republican agenda sends them here let's not alienate them with anti-Christian rhetoric. DEMOCRATS - IN THE USA - CANNOT WIN ELECTED OFFICES WITHOUT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF CHRISTIAN VOTERS SUPPORTING THEM!

Jesus would blow chunks if he had to watch the Latter Day republicans acting out in His name. What a disgrace.

Republicans desperately need to pick someone other than Dirty Donny* to be their republican family-values role model. Deplorable.

They have joined in the destruction of Native peoples in the past along with almost every other religion in the US. The difference is that the Catholic church's desire to stay in their evil and antiquated past was shown by these young men.

The Catholic Church won't even punish their child molesting priests so why would anyone think for a moment that they would discipline any of those jerks.

Without getting into his moral philosophy (which was truly Christian) he didn't believe in double jeopardy for us kids. If we screwed up at school and the school punished us, that was the end of it. If they wanted my parents to take care of it, they did. And believe me, I would much rather take the school punishment.

However, had I done something like what that little prick did this morning, believe me, the 'no double jeopardy rule' would have gone out the window in a flash, and although my dad has been gone for a number of years now, I suspect that I would STILL be grounded!
