Immediate change at Covington Catholic
Most Rev. Foys,
I write to you as a Christian, a graduate of Covington Catholic High School, a parishioner of Holy Spirit Parish in the Covington Diocese, and as a father of an 8th grade boy deciding where he will attend high school next year.
I am sure that you, as many of us in the Covington Catholic community, are disappointed and concerned about the recent actions of a number of CovCath boys in Washington D.C. at the March for Life.
In response to this issue, I urge you to demonstrate swift and decisive leadership.
Specifically, I am petitioning you to take the following actions:
1. The immediate termination of the school principal, Mr. Robert Rowe, for fostering an environment where these types of actions and words are condoned.
2. Appointment of a board of Covington Diocese Catholics to thoroughly review CovCaths admissions, educational standards, administration and social mission. This board should report directly to the lay population of the Diocese.
3. Cease any further association of CovCath with the March for Life. The time and money previously used for this trip should be redirected to Welcome House, a Catholic organization with a long track record of supporting the lives of the most vulnerable Covington residents.
Unfortunately, what happened in D.C. should not be a surprise to anyone who has been associated with CovCath. The above photo (from last years March for Life) was in the CovCath recruiting brochure my son received a few months ago:
Forgetting the fact that including "MAGA" propaganda in the school's recruitment material is likely illegal under the Johnson Amendment, it also shows a complete lack of judgement by CovCath administration.
CovCath is the only boys high school in the Diocese and its stated mission is to embrace the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in order to educate students spiritually, academically, physically and socially. CovCath is an institution in the service of all of Northern Kentucky rich or poor, Republican or Democrat, immigrant or native born.
I have watched with concern over the years as CovCath has become less diverse, more elite, and more expensive - even as the surrounding community has become more economically and ethnically diverse. It was not many years ago that CovCaths student body was primarily working-class boys from the urban areas in our diocese. I am not sure what happened in the last generation, but CovCath has simply made itself inaccessible to too many boys in our Diocese.
I am comforted by the fact that most of us in the CovCath Community are generous and kind Christians and that the events in D.C. are not reflective of most upstanding men who went through CovCath.
However, you would need to be willfully ignorant to maintain that CovCath administration has not allowed certain elitist and exclusive tendencies to take root in the school.
It is abundantly clear that CovCath has lost its way under current leadership and significant changes need to be made at the institution.
Your brother in Christ,
Matthew Lehman

(51,589 posts)What the Hell is that about. Were they going to the March For Life (even though they are MAGA asses)? That seems like a conflict of interests. And isn't the March for Life a "good" thing for youths? I am not in agreement with this group of students, this particular parent and the school in general. They are not loving Christians, they are hate filled hypocrites. Gee, what a surprise from an expensive, private religious school (sarcasm). Some things never change. Kavanaugh must be so thrilled.

(16,370 posts)A far right religious school will suddenly reverse course and condemn their own racist, elitist culture over this incident. Because that happens literally all the time.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)Sorry, but I doubt you know enough about the school to damn it as "far right" "racist" and "elitist" and even if you did, you can't definitively state that this particular group of creepy boys were acting out the values of the school -- Adolescents are inclined to rebel.

Ok so the boys in the vid were just what the school was looking for in a student when recruiting

(6,853 posts)Its probably too late to change the culture. Catholic schools educated my ancestors, most of whom did not have 2 pennies to rub together. The elitism has taken over many of these schools.

I am glad that the teachings of Christ have been brought up. That seems to have gotten lost over the last decade+.

Any sibling that attends Catholic schools should be removed
Parents must attend counseling with their students
All the students must perform 3 months of community service
No letters of recommendation for any students for job, college or military service
In the good Catholic way punish all the sinners and guilt trip them all, less they go to hell

Opposed to the dignity of the human person: Kentucky Catholic diocese condemns teens who taunted vet at March for Life
In a statement Saturday, the Catholic high school and diocese some of the teens belong to issued a statement of apology to the man, Nathan Phillips, and to Native Americans in general.
We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic high school students, a statement by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School read. This behavior is opposed to the Churchs teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person. The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion. We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and those who support the pro-life movement.

(79 posts)Although I've been reading news on this site for years, this is the first time posting. I was also very upset about the CovCath incident and wrote a letter to the Diocese reminding them that Catholics many times in history have been the target of discrimination and perhaps they have more in common with minorities than racists. The address is: Diocese of Covington Chancery, 1125 Madison Ave., Covington KY, 41011 if anyone else cares to write.

It is, apparently, considered a good thing at CovCath, whose concept of Christ has him sitting on a throne beside the Orange Faced serial adulterous, racist, bigoted, greedy traitor. Jesus, it's not You, it's Your followers.

(15 posts)As a graduate of CCH class of 73 I applaud Matthew and I signed his petition.Hopefully it will not fall on deaf ears. A reminder to everyone Covington is in a congressional district that is redder than red, with a few blue spots in Covington. Covington Catholic gets most of its boys from the suburbs which are heavily red. The point being they get this stuff from home, supporting this lying bastard, and reinforced at school. It is a different high school than I went to, it was a bit more urban and the teachers the brothers and priest were accused, with good reason of being too liberal.

If the pope himself doesnt do something soon. Something meaningful with action instead of words. Or thoughts and prayers, they will be even deeper in the shrouds of deception.

(2,992 posts)It more or less stuck. But the Catholic Church I knew was a lot more diverse and far more open than the students in the video.
(I started last night thinking, 'it's wrong, but they're kids.' Then I saw the comments one of the mothers of these kids made in defense of his behavior, and I'm actually feeling a little bit of pity. They were clearly given very poor guidance at home, and they'll have to work hard to overcome the limitations in life caused by their upbringing.)
Anyway - this petition reminds me that the kind of Catholic community I fondly remember is still alive.
