Reminder: Why democracies work and dictatorships don't
The reason is: nobody is that smart. Really
There is (wrote HL Mencken) always a well-known solution to every human problem neat, plausible and wrong
But when there are enough voices, those neat and plausible non-solutions usually don't survive long
The egos involved near dictatorial power are enormous, so bad news doesn't travel to the top. Decisions are made on the basis of personal enthusiasms, instead of evolving from careful study
The process of democracy is awkward, frustrating, halting, and uncertain
No one pretends (said Churchill) that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time
It's easy to sneer at the weird results of genuine compromise. Almost nobody ever likes those results. But they often save us from following neat, plausible and wrong ideas into complete ruin
