The Mayor of Covington, Kentucky, Explains What His City Stands For

https://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2019/01/mayor-covington-kentucky-explains-what-his-city-stands/580876/?utm_source=facebook&utm_term=2019-01-20T17%3A59%3A59&utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_content=edit-promo&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR1_W6X0Udix8heym_2GsbxZkaMz7vm9kdYvbfqIV2dcoWFsmOh8K-PKkKE

[Please see Updates at the end of this post.] I don’t know who the young man in the MAGA hat in this photo is. And I don’t care to know.

His name, which the internet will inevitably turn up, really doesn’t matter. It matters to his parents, of course—and to his teachers. I hope they will be reflective, and I know they should be ashamed: of this smirking young man and the scores of other (nearly all white) students from a Catholic school in Kentucky. Today, on the National Mall in Washington, they apparently mocked, harassed, and menaced a Native American man who had fought for the United States in Vietnam and who today represented both the U.S. and his Omaha nation with poise, courage, and dignity.

That man’s name matters. It is Nathan Phillips.

When that little shit's mother is saying things like "well the Black Muslims were harassing him" and "that man" got in my son's face, you know she's using the kind of racist dog whistles all the MAGAts use to rile up their fellow racists. She either bought or condoned his wearing of the MAGA hat, knowing full well what that represents. She's the kind of woman who sends her entitled white son to an anti-choice march to metaphorically "get in the faces" of women throughout the country about their reproductive choices, when it's absolutely ZERO percent his, or her, business. So fuck her several times over. If she'd minded her own damn business and focused on teaching her son right from wrong and ACTUAL respect for ALL human life (not just zygotes), her son wouldn't have been in Washington D.C. at all. And he sure as hell would have known better than to act like a smug little prick to a man who is 100000000x the man he'll ever hope to be.

thought of going to an anti choice rally (and we are catholic) my son and his friends would never sign up for such a venture. It seems beyond strange that these kids were sent on this trip. I have to believe they were coerced by some parental zealots from their school to attend this rally. I think part of the reason they acted out was because they were bored! Why not send them to DC to sight see and learn about their country’s history? How about learning about how government works? This all just feels so shallow and pointless for some reason.... as if they were out of place to begin with.

feeding the poor, helping the elderly, building houses, or any one of a thousand things that is actually more in line with the teachings of Christ. Instead they teach their children to be selfish, entitled little pricks with no sense of decency who presume to tell others how to live their lives but put up a big stink when called out for it. Fuck that.

I have friends and family who believe that abortion is wrong and would never choose to have one. But none of them would EVER presume to tell anyone else what to believe on the subject and would NEVER attend a rally like this.

Well worth reading the whole article.

I've mentioned before that I live in the area. Remember, that even though KY is thought of as part of 'The South' and, to our enduring shame, sends The Turtle to Congress, this area is very cosmopolitan. It is not at all uncommon to run across white, black, Muslim, and Christian at the grocery. The cars range from the beaters you don't think have 100 miles left on them before the scrap heap to Cadillacs, Mercedes, Proches, and Teslas. The Mayor of Covington expresses the feel of our neck of the woods much more that the MAGAt's in the video.
