Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) said Sunday that she does not regret her 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been accused of using chemical weapons to attack civilians in the countrys years-long civil war.
Gabbard, a 2020 presidential candidate, has previously drawn criticism for voicing skepticism that the Assad regime was behind the chemical weapons attacks.
Asked by CNNs Jake Tapper whether she regrets the meeting, Gabbard said she did not, drawing a comparison between her sit-down with Assad and President Trumps summit last year with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
I have seen this cost of war firsthand, which is why I fight so hard for peace, said Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran. And thats the reality of the situation that were facing here. Its why I have urged and continue to urge President Trump to meet with people like Kim Jong Un in North Korea because we understand whats at stake here. The only alternative to having these kinds of conversations is more war.

(6,110 posts)In the sense she is the only person with military combat experience. At least on military matters her ideas should matter. I do not know enough about her to say if she is qualified on other major issues.

(3,473 posts)Rep. Tulsi Gabbard on Wednesday slammed President Donald Trump as "Saudi Arabia's bitch" in the latest scathing criticism of the commander-in-chief's extraordinary statement this week to stand by the country's rulers despite the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The Hawaii Democratic congresswoman made the remarks in a brief and blistering tweet Wednesday afternoon.
"Hey @realdonaldtrump: being Saudi Arabia's bitch is not 'America First,'" wrote Gabbard, a 37-year-old Iraq War veteran who at various points has been considered a rising star in her party.

(19,979 posts)she is not a head of state who has the power to set policy. (War criminal) Assad probably thanked her for her show of support and told her to come back and bring the boss next time.

(11,631 posts)Gabbard is a right wing democrat who sides with Trump and Assad and repeatedly criticized Obama... AOC is coming from the left and has drawn criticism for getting out in front of her skis perhaps, but to compare these two shows zero understanding of ideology.

No way. Not sure what her angle is here but either she's getting really bad advice or she's got an internally distorted view of her own position relative to where the Democratic party is today (and where it is going).

(11,631 posts)... did not deter Gabbard from meeting with and expressing support for a war criminal whose "crimes against humanity" include the mass torture and extermination of thousands of detainees including women and children, the use of chemical weapons and barrel bombs packed with explosives and shrapnel against his own people, and mass starvation due to laying siege to his own cities.
