The Freepers acted predictably to the Covington students fiasco...

Blaming the Black Israelites, (of course,) and saying Nathan Philips is a Soros puppet.

Oh, and using a far-right nutjob web site to "prove" their racism, which includes calling the NA's "Injuns."

There were several folks here at DU yesterday suggesting the teens were provoked, as if that should somehow excuse their behavior.

One of the Covington Catholic "chaperones" filmed the back and forth taunting between the kids and the Black Israelites. Why didn't the chaperones move the kids away? Why didn't the chaperones tell the kids to stop engaging? Instead, they filmed it? For an hour?

I believe that the school chaperones hoped to show a video on social media of white kids being "harassed" by black people. I believe that the school instigated the conflict, then passively filmed it, in order to show that they were "victims."

The American Indian man tried to defuse the tension and so the mob of teen males turned on him.

The entire incident makes Covington Catholic School look terrible. Disgraceful failure to guide and protect their students.

The title is bad enough but it also bothered me that they said the "build the wall" and "go back to the reservation" can't be heard but CNN knows cell phone microphones aren't very good.

Someone even posted an almost two hour long video of the incident which many folks took the time to view in its entirety.

One of of the most admirable things about DUers is how we focus on facts and evidence and draw our conclusions after careful consideration and thoughtful reflection.

Another is how folks here are willing to calmly and respectful engage with one another to try to acquire as much information as possible to help inform our opinions.

These traits are what make the DU community so special, in my view.

They were provoked by BI. The NA group was also provoked by BI. everyone on scene commented that Phillips was there to “calm down” the students or “came to the rescue” (spontaneous utterances). So if everyone there saw Phillips as a calming influence, why did the kids turn hostile to him?

My thoughts (from most favorable to kids to least favorable)
1. They were angry and confused about Phillips’ intent
2. Because of their own racism, living in a bubble, they saw the darker skin NA as the same as the BI and equally a provocateur
3. They were angry and frustrated and had the chance to bully and demean a passive person who was their whipping boy.

Unfortunately, I see no.3 as the likely scenario

It’s important to note that BI men were taunting and using slurs against all whites, all blacks, all LBGT, all Native Americans. Ugly, ugly slurs. Everyone else seemed to take it in stride. Either walked away, took video, tried to debate. The BI group even heckled a prayer group and called their priest child molesters. The BI group never ever left their space. The boys got dangerously close to the BI group. Anger, and I think, some fascination. They probably had never heard someone else’s “truth” before. Completely sheltered from POC, from girls, from the ugliness of white suppression. It’s “cute” how they used their school chants to intimidate, as if the BI were some rival basketball team. When faced with Phillips, their anger took over and they wanted to make someone feel small.

Spontaneous utterance from woman “you’re acting like a mob,” has to be given credence.

One extremely revealing moment: when an adult said “time to leave, bus is here,” they moved on a dime, like a well trained army, not the usual herding of cats. Someone had control over them and could have broken up their little intimidation game before it got started. Someone was sitting back enjoying the humiliation game.

The chaperone didn't move their group further away. The chaperone didn't tell the kids not to engage with BI. The chaperone stood passively and filmed the interaction for over an hour.

School takes dozens of teens to the annual right to life march, which is as political as it gets. This is the annual parade where people hold signs with bloody fetuses, etc. Really extreme stuff.

So the school buses dozens of teens there, all wearing their MAGA hats. They're waiting for a bus for hours in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

As expected, the group attracts attention. And instead of moving the kids away or reminding them not to engage, the chaperone watches and films as more and more kids arrive and join in an escalating situation.
