(8,445 posts)My kids would have been smacked into next week......figuratively speaking, of course.

And they would have to forfeit any and all fun money to some charitable organization that helps Native Americans for at least the entire year.
To think that they can foul our country's sacred space with this sort of unAmerican type of behavior is beyond merely offensive. That they have any defendants at all is a sign of where we are as a nation.

(5,124 posts)Sigh - Let down again by their elders.
It is disgusting. Not really a crime being committed here. But allow me go off track for a moment because it is a part of this big picture. I am always amazed as a woman of color that young white men are allowed to make mistakes, and go on with their lives. Young black men, get to be " thugs", go to prison, get killed. If this were a group of young black men. This would be a different story. I shudder to think how this story might have ended.
Mr Phillips had attempted to intervene in an argument between these young men and a group of black men ironically.

(33,643 posts)You can't positively determine whether they're trying to have fun with him, rather than mocking him. Put it this way, I won't be sending it around to people I know as evidence of their bad behavior. There's other, more compelling footage of that.
It does, however, prove that the claims that they 'felt threatened' are bullshit, and it doesn't excuse that smarmy kid getting in Phillips face, nor the group surrounding him, nor their chanting 'build that wall' at him.
And the evidence at the Basketball game ... is FAR more damning.

(30,811 posts)If you look around the crowd, some seemed a little confused.
When combined with the later footage, it's a great example of group dynamics. Somewhere some sociology student has discovered their thesis topic!

(128,979 posts)You mean as if he were some court jester or monkey entertaining the crowd?
Why not grow the fuck up and maybe listen to what he is singing? But it's apparent that they like their parents and generations before them, considered the native people here (and my own ancestors from the continent of Africa) as "savages". Not human.
Can you imagine the outcry if a group of black kids started mocking this woman if she were out there singing -

(30,811 posts)I agree with the poster in that, if you look back in the crowd, some kids were dancing as if they had encountered a street musician.

(128,979 posts)and this was in some of the "worst" schools here in the city of Philadelphia. The irony being that those "worst" schools were also some of the most diverse and to watch the dynamic of kids (including whites) dealing with cross-culture interactions, was fascinating - even if they may have teased each other. Meanwhile the type of nonsense shown in that video from members of an apparent proudly homogeneous school, looks more like what a bunch of 3rd grade kids would do.
In addition here in Philly, we have (or at least had) one of the largest parochial school systems in the country and many of those kids came through the Catholic school system from K-12. If anything, that type of crap was not tolerated. It was such that I was always in awe at how easily the Catholic school kids were able to get jobs over the summer compared to the public school kids. They weren't always innocent but there was a certain discipline that they often displayed.
The stereotypical "tomahawk chop" is STILL going on - I saw dozens of stills and videos just this past week of KC Chiefs fans doing that. The whole debate over the "Redskins" name used for Washington D.C.'s football team, the Atlanta Braves issue, and so on, continues to underscore the perpetuation of the type of stuff these kids were doing and repeating out of pure ignorance and pride of that ignorance.
And this includes black folk too.

(45,442 posts)people would still make excuses for them. It a privilege of being white and male, people make excuses for whatever they do.
If it wasn't DC, there would probably be some police brutality against the Black and Native American people and excuses for the white boys.
I would commend the unpaid federal police for not shooting anyone that day.

People are responding so strongly to these videos because they are so emblematic of the violence that indigenous people have suffered for over 500 years in the United States. We have been raped, relocated, trafficked, separated, degraded, demoralized, and massacred by the United States government and a culture of media, economy, education, and religion that has dehumanized indigenous people for the entire history of this stolen country. Presently, this country continues to poison indigenous people by defiling our water and pumping drugs and alcohol into indigenous communities; regulate native bodies through tribal numbers and blood quantum laws; and force assimilation (culturally, spiritually).
These are tactics of genocide. An ongoing, unrecognized genocide.
These videos are a brutal reminder of a very real unfinished battle that indigenous people are still fighting. We are fighting to be acknowledged, to be counted, to be part of the future. Quite simply, we are fighting to exist.
But these videos are also a testament: a testament to the bravery, dignity, grace, strength, passion, and power of indigenous people. Leaders like Nathan are essential to the survival of indigenous people because they hold experience of our history and traditions. Indigenous elders have given their lives to protect our identities, our sovereignty, our lands, our people, our ways of being, only to be met time and time again with violence or at the very least, the smug, smirking faces of our oppressors like the boys of Covington Catholic High School.
