What is the logical connection between a border wall and shutting down government?

IOW, what makes this not just extortion, hostage-taking, terrorism? Shouldn't OpEds be using that language in their headlines, and really hammering it?

What was the stated reason for the shutdown? The Wall money? Could it have just as easily been because he got a bad burger for dinner?

I do not understand.

Let's get universal background checks. And an increase in the minimum wage. And a tax surcharge on individuals making more than $5 million a year that will cover twice the amount that is appropriated for border security.

Apparently Trump and his supporters believe that a wall is a higher priority than the operations of the unfunded portions of government combined (and than paying the government workers who are still on the job despite the shutdown). Well, if its really that high a priority, then why not agree to other things. Unless of course, not having background checks is actually a higher priority for the Trump crowd than the wall is.
