Do you think the Covington kids did anything wrong in D.C.? Are they innocent victims?

The Covington kids acted obnoxiously in DC and ought to be reprimanded for their behavior.
The kid who was falsely doxxed and turned out not to be affiliated with the group at all is an innocent victim.

(16,457 posts)Why should the Covington kids be reprimanded?
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I am not sure why you would dispute this basic fact when a link has been provided.
The Covington kids should be reprimanded for their obnoxious behavior. Students have a responsibility to behave respectfully, particularly when they are on a field trip representing their school.

(16,457 posts)Also, Is Sandmann an innocent victim?

(58,724 posts)Review student expectations and explain how the students violated the school's code of conduct with their behavior. Maybe require a written apology and community service work.
A school-wide assembly focusing on cultural sensitivity could be a good idea also.
Sandmann is not an innocent victim as far as I am concerned, but I am not comfortable with the violent tweets and death threats that have been directed his way. Hopefully, he will have learned something positive from this experience and will show greater sensitivity towards others in the future. Though the fact that he seems to be a big Trump supporter does not bode well. Fortunately, a lot can change with the right mentoring and guidance along the way, so one can hope for the best.

(42,014 posts)Blackface in ANY context in a mostly White school is offensive, and needs to stop. Why? Because of the overwhelming number of racists that reside everywhere. Because of the history of blackface. Wearing black clothes on blackout day? Fine.
Wearing black paint on ones face is bullshit. Staying unaware of the possible implications is being complicit in racism. It needs to stop. Its not acceptable. Its not cute. Its not school spirit. Its problematic when any school does it.

(4,407 posts)Regardless of purpose or intent, the whole concept of allowing your students to wear black face is either a result of being idiots or at best, simply not caring.

(1,533 posts)It was for the new lighting system that allows the lights to be shuttered to cause a "Black Out", but still come back instantly when the shutters are opened. The school sold a metric Sh!t ton of black T shirts, which I have one kicking around here someplace.
There were exactly zero students wearing blackface, although some were dressed as barnyard animals, as is normal.
