Obama had everything you could want in a candidate -- energetic, charismatic, smart, great speaker, beautiful family, great backstory -- but in the land of the "one drop" rule, his race was an obstacle to surmount that was as daunting as any in America. Ridiculous? Yep, but we ARE talking about a nation where Donald Trump found a path to the White House.

So how did Obama win? It was a particular set of circumstances: namely the selection of Sarah Palin as his opponent's running mate and the economic disaster of 2008. Without those two things, I'm not so sure he would have won.

I like Kamala Harris. I wouldn't mind seeing her as POTUS.

But she doesn't have nearly the resume Hillary Clinton had and has to overcome the racial nonsense as well. I wish her luck but I just don't see it working.

If she has to take on Trump in 2020 something has gone horribly wrong.

so much to be impressed as I was by her questioning in confirmation hearings. Alas, she fell short in my opinion. She’s sharp but she didn’t resonate with me. Sorry — wanted to be excited but wasn’t.

Having said that, I will vote for her if she wins the nomination or is on the ticket as VP. I will also keep an open mind going forward since, after all, this was her first interview since announcing. I’m sure it is impossibly difficult to hit the perfect tone and messaging under such circumstances. Perhaps she will change my mind as her campaign moves forward.

I think just about any decent Democratic candidate can beat Donald Trump in 2020. My question is can she govern. Although she has had years of experience in government work, I wonder if she had enough experience at the federal level to be able to govern well as President. Some political scientists have said that individuals with more experience have done a better job of being President than those with less. I think there are ways to challenge what political scientists say, but maybe there needs to be consideration concerning whether Kamala Harris would be able to do the job of President if she wins the election. Does she have enough executive experience to run the Presidency?

Just in case anyone is wondering my question about Harris' experience is not due to her being black. I would rather vote for someone who had been a governor, or who had more experience in the Senate.

But it's a long, long time until the election.
There's a lot of vetting and debates to come.
If popularity were the only criteria, it'd be Harris/O'Rourke.
