You knew there was going to be a conflict somewhere to detract. AND, there is huge oil reserves there. That is what we have been after for years.

(16,423 posts)There already is too much oil-production and Venezuela's crude is of very poor quality. The price of crude oil is too low, because of over-production. And there is too much production because everybody wants to sell as much as possible because the price is so low.
From a capitalist point of view, the best course would be to reduce oil-production to ramp up the price.
Crude oil from Venezuela is of an especially bad quality: It's a heavy crude (meaning you can't refine it into gasoline) and it contains lots of impurities like groundwater and salt, which makes it difficult to refine. That's why refineries mix venezuelan crude with other, lighter crudes.
Venezuela once tried to pay a debt with a tanker for of venezuelan crude and the other one said No: Venezuelan crude is is just too much work to refine it into something valuable.
Venezuela has been an economic powder-keg for years.
Then Maduro created his own parliament, to rival the real one.
Then Maduro created a new executive council that gives him direct control over soldiers.
Then Maduro basically dissolved the real parliament.
All the while doing nothing to solve Venezuela's economic problems.
