'Make-believe' lawmaker Lindsey Graham burned to the ground by George Will for sucking up to Trump

‘Make-believe’ lawmaker Lindsey Graham burned to the ground by George Will for sucking up to Trump

TOM BOGGIONI
24 JAN 2019 AT 10:01 ET

-snip-

In blunt terms, Will asked why Graham even decided to become a lawmaker since it has become apparent he holds no firm beliefs other the acquisition of power and how to wield it. “Back in the day, small rural airports had textile windsocks, simple and empty things that indicated which way the wind was blowing,” the Washington Post columnist began. “The ubiquitous Sen. Lindsey O. Graham has become a political windsock, and as such, he — more than the sturdy, substantial elephant — is emblematic of his party today.”

“In 2015, he said Donald Trump was a ‘jackass.’ In February 2016, he said: ‘I’m not going to try to get into the mind of Donald Trump, because I don’t think there’s a whole lot of space there. I think he’s a kook, I think he’s crazy, I think he’s unfit for office.’,” Will recalled before adding, “Today, Graham, paladin of conservatism and scourge of opportunism, says building the border wall is an existential matter for the GOP: ‘If we undercut the president, that’s the end of his presidency and the end of our party.’ Well.”

According to Will, Graham’s biggest sin — to date — is his belief that Trump should bypass Congress and declare a national emergency in order to get his vanity project border wall built.

“Stay focused on this: Anyone — in Graham-speak, ANYONE — who at any time favors declaring an emergency, or who does not denounce the mere suggestion thereof, thereby abandons constitutional government,” he wrote.

Then he dropped a bomb on Graham.

“Why do they come to Congress, these people such as Graham?” Will asked. “These people who, affirmatively or by their complicity of silence, trifle with our constitutional architecture, and exhort the president to eclipse the legislative branch, to which they have no loyalty comparable to their party allegiance?”

Seven times, Graham has taken the oath of congressional office, ‘solemnly’ swearing to ‘support and defend the Constitution’ and to ‘bear true faith and allegiance’ to it, ‘without any mental reservation’,” Will charged. “Graham, who is just 1 percent of one-half of one of the three branches of one of the nation’s many governments, is, however, significant as a symptom.”

“When the Trump presidency is just a fragrant memory, the political landscape will still be cluttered with some of this president’s simple and empty epigones, the make-believe legislators who did not loudly and articulately recoil from the mere suggestion of using a declared emergency to set aside the separation of powers,” he concluded.

They've all sat on their asses and allowed this to happen, while several have actively helped it come about. In 2015 they were all calling Trump a jackass, and then a year later he was suddenly God's gift to mankind. But none of them have done the jobs they were elected and took an oath to do - to uphold the Constitution and pass legislation that will benefit the American people. Their job is never to kiss the President's ass but to create laws that will manage the processes of government. In this they have FAILED big time. Not one GOP incumbent deserves to be re-elected. They're all just a waste of valuable space.

These days will pass...I just wonder what will be left when the 'glacier of god awfulness' finally creeps out of town. The gop should never be allowed to resurrect itself. It's proven Anti-American. Stamp out the GOP. Forever. (Notice on the news the gop has started talking about their party going forward...as if nothing has happened to this country in the last 3 years. You KNOW the lectures about spending, and values and morals are coming. Hear my groan in advance)

Garland was only the tip of the iceberg. They held back on all levels of judicial appointments for more than 2 years.

It amounts to judicial gerrymandering abetted by Russian election violations.

the first 6 years was with holds and filibusters. Then, when they got the majority in 2014, it was just stopping the entire process.

They did similar when Bill Clinton was president, though not quite as egregious.

His indignance rings very hallow.

The "conservative" movement has been a fraud my entire adult lifetime, moving steadily toward this point and time with countless scumbags like Gingrich and Hastert who this flowery pukebag stridently cheered on.

Edited to add: Will may be the last of the true conservatives who is also a public intellectual. Do I agree with his conservatism? Not necessarily, but I respect him, and feel I could converse with him. As with Steven Schmidt, it would be a case of arguing over the details of governance and the details of the Constitution, not over whether one of us is an "enemy of the people."

to further reduce regulations and to reduce the size of government. If tRump had been his "perfect" prez, the GOP might have had full eight years to run roughshod over everything we hold dear in our government. He can't just be satisfied with all the damage this gang of thieves is already doing and shut the hell up.

Now, the mask is off his GOP monster and George has become irrelevant.......

I love watching the GOP's never-Trumpers cry in their beer......

Ever since he left the Republican Party, he has been having these occasional bouts of lucidity. If he doesn't seek treatment, and soon, they might take over his brain and flood it with common sense, and THEN what would he do?
