I know this is small for most of you given the news from today but

the chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court retired today effective next month. Current split is 5 to 2 Democratic, now it will be 6 to 1 Democratic. Apparently tradition suggests that the next Chief would be the sole GOP member left but we would still control 6 to 1. Nationally, this should end one of the worst gerrymanders in the US House. Our 13 member delegation is split 9 to 3 with one race outstanding in favor of the GOP despite the fact that Democrats got the majority of the two party vote in contested districts (one GOP rep ran unopposed). Democrats also won a majority of the two party vote in both houses of the general assembly but the GOP has solid majorities in both houses. Again, I understand this is small in comparison to today but this will soon give us another 2 to 3 seats in Congress.

7. Our (elected) PA State Supreme Court shift to 5 (Democrat) - 2 (GOP)

allowed us to finally get our gerrymandered congressional districts thrown out last March, which eventually netted us 4 more Democrats in our congressional delegation this past November. When all was said and done, with the special election that put Conor Lamb in, the delegation went from 13 (R) - 5(D) to 9 (R) - 9 (D).

So congrats to NC and hope that between the governor and that court, you can get your districts fixed.

If there is something at the state level requiring a certain way the districts should be drawn (here in PA, the districts needed to be "contiguous" with minimal splits in counties/municipalities), then getting it resolved by a D-leaning state Supreme Court can work without the fear of the SCOTUS getting involved to halt the attempts to fix the gerrymandering.

I used to live in NC in the '80's and part of the '90's and was discouraged that they seemed to be going backwards these past few years. I gave it some thought to moving back there after I retired, but what I was reading about the state discouraged me.

So glad you added that last sentence. I wasn't following what was going on there, with who won what. I saw references to the GOP person winning, and references to what I thought were state races. So I had no idea the result is a GAIN for the Democrats...in the national House of Rep?

This is an example of why it's so important to vote Democratic. We have a Democratic governor who appoints a justice to fill this vacancy.

Any victory in the slightest, and there's nothing small about yours, deserves to be celebrated. Especially when it comes to these goddamn gerrymanders.

So, congrats!!

It means a lot for the governance of your state. Was the appointment of Flint's "emergency manager" small?

Plus, it could mean more Dems in the house from your state.
