participate in primaries, e.g., CA (I don't know if it passed), still haven't found anything nationally (democratic party platform), but I'm pretty sure they included it as a talking point at least...

Such as you need to have been a Democrat for a number of years before you can run as a Democrat for the presidency.

Edit: it does not say you have to have been elected as a Democrat before, just that you have to be a Democrat and pledge to run and stay a democrat.

You may be right there is no specific number , it says you have to be a Democrat prior to running.

At the time a
presidential candidate announces their
candidacy publicly, they must publicly affirm
that they are a Democrat. Each candidate
pursuing the Democratic nomination shall
affirm, in writing, to the National Chairperson
of the Democratic National Committee that
they:

A. are a member of the Democratic Party;
B. will accept the Democratic nomination; and
C. will run and serve as a member of the
Democratic Party.
