With Temperatures in the upper midwest predicted to

be -20+ degrees this next week, a lot of people are going to have a dead battery surprise coming. I thought of that while I watched the weather report on this morning's local news. The original battery in my 2013 KIA Soul is now 6 1/2 years old. It's still starting the car just fine, but...

It took me a few phone calls to find a place that has time available to replace the battery and that has the one I need in stock, but I finally found a Tires+ nearby that can do it tomorrow at 1 PM. That's just before the big snowstorm that's predicted starts. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

My first thought was Batteries Plus, but when I called, the guy said it's too cold for them to install a new battery. I thought that was interesting. So much for them and their cute TV ads...

Planning ahead sometimes makes sense, I guess. It's not something I do very often, but I really don't want a non-starter next week. Oh, well...

How old is your car battery? Do you live where it will drop to -20 or lower? Think about it.

It's not going to be that cold here but it will be in the 20s so I'll hook it up when I get home

4. Too cold to install a new battery?

Do they not have an indoor space that is warmed up to above freezing?

I have a 2017 Honda Fit so that battery is relatively new. Plus, where I live it won't be getting that cold, but you've put a good warning up.

Not sure about other ones

Just glad I had mine checked and was able to replace it when I had the car at the dealer a couple weeks ago.

However, it's a bad look for the business, since this is Minnesota and most people realize they need a new battery during the cold weather. Since they're not the only place you can get a battery, it's got to cost them money to turn customers away, just when they need one.

Never mind, though. I found a place that will do it for me. I even made sure they keep power connected during the replacement so the car's computer is always powered up. Disconnect the battery without that and you're in for a few drives with the check engine light on.

I guess everyone does that these days, though, since every car has a computer like that. I'm really, really old!

that you can easily pop out if the battery poops out. I got one for my last car that I used once or twice a week until I finally changed the battery.

Always carry that now, and a set of cables, because you never know...

Besides, you never know when you could be a Good Samaritan.

They're actually "booster cables" and have lower gauge wire. Also, if you have a vehicle you don't drive regularly, think about adding a battery cutoff switch to keep it from draining. I have one on my RV. And like the poster says, batteries rarely last more than 5 years.

At least my local one is a great place. The guys - and the staff is all male whenever I've been in the store - aren't condescending and they never act as though my questions are stupid - even though they probably are.

They changed out my last battery even though coma capable of doing it myself. My last visit was to get some paint, etc. to do a little body work (a really bad scratch that would only get worse with rust, etc.) Again nothing but totally helpful. They had all done some bodywork themselves. All kinds of helpful hints because it was obvious I hadn't ever done this type of project before. FYI - my car looks great and doing it myself saved $$$

8. If you've ever let your battery get drained, it loses its ability to hold a charge

Once might not be enough. Twice is bad. Three times, and you must replace your battery even if it's less than a year old.

Head over to Pep Boys and get yourself a new Bosch Battery. 6 1/2 years on a OEM battery is a real push for Minny. Don't feel bad,we have to replace our batteries here every 3 plus years because of the heat.

I'm not going to take any changes. How could I get to the takeout place if the car won't start, after all.

I agree, 6.5 years is pushing an OEM battery, but I've waited because it's still working fine, down to 0 degrees. At -20, I want a brand new battery in there, just in case I need to go somewhere. I won't, of course, but it could happen.

The car also needs new tires, but that will have to wait for a couple of weeks. The check's in the mail, I understand.

We were going to trade the Soul in on a new one, but we've decided to keep it and buy a new one from scratch, so we have two decent vehicles. the 2013 will be the winter "beater," after that. It only has 36k miles on it, so it should be good for quite some time yet. My wife wants a new one with an automatic transmission. She's tired of shifting. I want the new one for the rear camera and the latest safety gimmicks, like lane sensing and blind spot warnings. Zoom!

36k is just breakin miles. Love to do a new 4 runner, but, the one we have has only 84k and that's after 9 years . And most of those miles are from here to Minny and back. Past year drove only 4800 miles and most of that was to Minny and back.

All those new Gadgets are really neat, but,no car payments are even neater. Plus new Car Tabs and Insurance is brutal here in Clark County.

It's very easy to do. Then go back in with the old one (never dump it, it's very bad for the environment unless properly disposed) and they will give you credit for returning it.

and they connect backup power to the cables to keep the computer from being without power during the replacement. Without that, you end up with the Check Engine light on for several starts while the computer re-programs itself. It's a pain in the ass. Besides, I don't have a heated garage, and the Tires + place does, so the replacement is a lot easier if I just let them do it. Also, I don't have to make another trip with the old battery to return it. On the Soul, you have to also remove the air intake extension to change the battery. That takes a little longer. I could do it myself, of course, and use my battery charger to keep the juice flowing to the computer, but why would I do that, really, in 0-degree weather in my unheated garage?

I'm really not sure what the benefit would be for me to install it myself. If I let them do it, some guy gets paid, besides. See if you can think of a reason for me to do it myself...
