Washington (CNN)As President Donald Trump announced in the Rose Garden on Friday that his quixotic bid to secure more than $5 billion for a border wall would end with no money, he was met with applause from his Cabinet secretaries and senior aides.
But the clapping belied a pervasive sense of defeat.
Instead of emerging victorious, many of Trump's allies are walking away from a record-breaking government shutdown feeling outplayed, not least by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The President is now more unpopular than he was before the shutdown began, sacked with blame for the 35-day lapse in funding.
Friday's announcement was an extraordinary comedown that left many in the White House and those who support Trump marveling at the futility of the preceding four weeks of brinkmanship. In the eyes of some aides and outside advisers, an entire fruitless month has passed that cannot be recouped, a waste of the most valuable asset a White House has: the President's attention and time.

(146,317 posts)and walk out the door. Maybe you'll avoid the coming disaster that awaits Donald Trump. Maybe you'll be able to still land another job out there if you leave now. Maybe not, but your odds are better now than they will be later, once Donny Jr. and Jared have been indicted.
Just walk away and let Donald Trump run things all by himself. Don't look back. Resign and write a book while you're waiting for your next gig to show up. Spill all the beans and maybe you can regain some minor amount of respect from the public. I don't know.
Why punish yourselves further? Just resign and move on with your lives. You made one bad decision by hiring on to the Trump tyranny. Don't make another one by staying.

(14,972 posts)There isn't a simpler strategy than this: when public opinion agrees with your position, stick to it. The American people didn't want a shutdown, didn't think a wall was a good thing to spend money on, and thought the shutdown was the fault of the guy who said it was HIS shutdown. They didn't change their minds about any of that, and the Democrats didn't change their position either.
"How about this deal?"
"No, we won't give concessions in response to hostage-taking."
"Well what about this other deal?"
"No, we won't give concessions in response to hostage-taking."
"And that deal over there?"
"No, we won't give concessions in response to hostage-taking."
"Have you considered this fine deal we have on offer today?"
"No, we won't give concessions in response to hostage-taking."
"But what about THIS deal? *hand flourish*"
"No, we won't give concessions in response to hostage-taking."
"Damn it, we're getting outplayed!!!"
