I tried to go to Oakland rally but the line is at least 12 blocks long. Completely unexpected. I saw police calling for more as crowd is so large !!! Of course, the folks look like the USA. A broad cross section of folks wanting change
I dont think I will get in so Im heading home to watch it on tv

(53,410 posts)And I love that they moved their Primary date up! The primaries will be very interesting to watch!
Its time for the big states like California whos taxes are allocated to the small states having more of an impact. California is the 5th largest economy in the WORLD, and a progressive blue state. It has the credentials to lead.

(10,721 posts)...that actually reflect our diverse electorate. Instead of Iowa and New Hampshire, maybe Illinois and Florida. Or Maryland and Arizona.
How impactful the California primary will be depends, at least in part, on how many candidates are still in the race at that point. If there are still half a dozen or more candidates, we could potentially see a lot of vote/delegate-splitting.
Those first couple states are crucial for Warren, Sanders, Biden, Brown, etc. If Harris wins either Iowa or New Hampshire, she'll be in great shape heading into Nevada and South Carolina ahead of Super Tuesday. If she somehow wins both IA and NH, the race will be over.

(81,261 posts)for a generation with the anti-immigrant Prop 187. Thank you, Pete! You may have won the battle (getting yourself elected), but you lost the war. Arnold got in for eight years but he was widely considered a Republican you can kinda live with. But the state legislature is OURS. And GOP will be fighting an uphill battle in California for a LONG time, especially with the demographics changing.

I'm watching on YouTube from home, but I was tempted to go. Glad I didn't try, the pics look insane.

(5,272 posts)and I'm thinking the big donors "see" this too....she's a good one to bet on and she's not going to burn down their empires.(not to take away from her actual popularity, because apparently she just pulled a crap load of small donor money, and she certainly has some good progressive stances to hang her hat on).
But given that California moved up its primary date, that will probably give her a major early boost.

(32,640 posts)And even if she was, it's still legal. Interesting that she's so far ahead of the pack, even without it.
And she's transparent with her personal finances, so there's that putting her far ahead of some others.
She hasn't made the mistake of saying Democratic voters who support others have bad judgement or called them her "opponents."

(10,170 posts)Major events seem to attract the haters and nasty provocateurs first. Then after a while, after they have poisoned the well, they go away and normal people come out.
It's a good sign really because this must be a major event or the haters would have stayed home.

I remember in 08 when Obama announced in Springfield. My husband & I lived 3 hours north of Springfield by the border with Wisc.
We got up super early and drove to see him.
It was a high of 9 degrees.
And still by the time we got there it was so crowded that Obama was a little speck far away. sigh

(17,339 posts)The fact that the midterms are just finished and that now we're starting to look at primaries and the next election means that the US system is, as we all know, seriously fucked up.
And unfortunately, because of the 24 hour news cycle, our insanity is infectious and is starting to proliferate throughout the rest of the world.

(5,272 posts)to vet the candidates as we do. Sanders will be vetted, Warren, Gabbard...etc. You think that the left didn't have negative things to say about Gabbard or Ojeta? I invite you to check out Kulinski, majority report, tyt, etc. They like a lot about her but don't shy away from their major issues, some of which appear to be deal breakers, assuming she is outperformed on those issues by her opponents.

(16,953 posts)like was done to Hillary. Injecting one mans version of corruption like repeating big donors as a means to denigrate her isnt vettiing. Releasing taxes would be an example of vetting...

(16,953 posts)public servant since the 70s, but you tried to pin her long-standing name recognition on big donors which has been parroted especially since 2015. Its obviously meant to smear Harris, as well as Clinton and Feinstein.

Then again, I don't have an aching need to see one-sidedness where none exists.

(1,568 posts)With Harris I believe there are at least a couple elephants in the room that need to be discussed and explored. For example, I didn't realize her office was the one who made the comment about releasing prisoners would harm fire camp participation. She came out and against that later, but I think it's a good idea to confront her on that and get the details on why that was even said in the first place. There is also a particular case in which she defended a prosecutor who did some shady stuff in a trial against a child molester.
I'm all for discussing those and getting her to explain those. However, I am also all for including all the positive things she did too, and not just focusing on the negative. I am also against making up lies or stretching the truth to turn people against her. One example of a lie is that I saw on protest signs and I saw people posting social media saying she's pro-death penalty. As far as I can tell, that doesn't seem to be the case. She has stated she's anti-death penalty and in every case I've seen she has recommended against the death penalty despite pressure to push for it. Then there is the twisting truths in which it is claimed she is evil because she locks up and warehouses drug offenders. What's left out is that while there be higher conviction rates of these offenses, these people are being sent to treatment programs instead of being warehoused. This seems a lot like the attack on Beto a couple months back in which it was claimed he was beholden to oil & gas companies because second only to cruz he received the most money from people associated with oil & gas. But what was left out is that he didn't receive corporate money, but rather it was donations from regular people who happen to work in oil & gas. Which makes sense given he's in Texas and oil & gas employ a lot of people in Texas. It's just disingenuous.
The other attacks against Harris that concern me probably more than anything because there isn't much that can be said to counter them, are the attacks against her identity. For an example of what I mean, search 'Tariq Nasheed Kamala harris' on twitter to see what sort of stuff I am talking about. There's a large contingent of folks around him who have a lot of sway, who are saying some very ignorant and divisive things. There some core people there who have some sway with a lot of folks who would usually vote democrat, who may be swayed to not vote based on these words. If I was a republican operative or maybe a foreign government who wanted to harm a candidate, then I would focus in on messages like these and amplify them to make them appear more mainstream and accepted. These tribal and divisive messages are really difficult to combat once they get out of hand. It really is a form of hacking the human mind.
Also, when someone says that Harris is a female Obama and they say it like it's a negative thing, then we probably have totally different ideas about what we want for our country.
*I'm not nessecarily pro-Harris at this point. I'm just anti-bullshit.

(58,785 posts)and stability back in the improved form an advancing society should strive for, but overall a restoration of the America we grew up believing in. Those are the kind of positive, principled, liberal, achievable, egalitarian goals once again that I'll always vote for.
Btw, some billionaire named Howard Schultz intends to enter the race as a (self-funded?) populist leader, intending to draw from both right and left those who believe they need "change" from what corrupt fools like Kamala Harris and whoever the Republicans nominate offer.
