When Scott Pelley asked him if he was worried that he would siphon off enough Democratic votes to ensure
a second Trump term he not only didn't answer the question, he reverted to talking points. He's another egotist like Perot and Nader.
A vote for Schultz is a vote for Trump.

(6,925 posts)Talk is still cheap phase. I would think he is likely a terrible candidate with a typical, over-simplistic obsession to being chief executive.
Also there are a lot more moving parts in the U.S. Government than in a coffee franchise, and he should take as much time learning those as he took learning the coffee biz.
Business-owners like him in 2019 have an almost religious zeal about simplicity---declaring it a magic elixir for anything that ails government or society. But sometimes that attachment to simplicity is borne out of their inexperience in grasping all of the moving parts of a complex issue. They have no choice but to be simple, "complicated" is over their head.
Over-simplification is what elected Trump. Nobody wants to ever go there again; as well as electing a president specifically because he has no government experience. So Shultz's candidacy is half-over before it even gets starts.
Sorry for the rant.

He retired from Starbucks, so he has no business to increase his brand for. Unless he has something else planned. OR maybe he left Starbucks in preparation for this.
I guess we'll find out.
I noticed that he didn't answer that question about siphoning off votes. Not a good answer.

(7,813 posts)I never heard of him before today. So, he's a CEO of a chain of coffee shops - is he any more qualified for the presidency than the horrendous failure now occupying the office? I'm guessing that he isn't.

(5,995 posts)He had serious policy proposals as well. His ego told him he had a chance, but his head knew Clinton would be better than an extension of Reagan/Bush.
Nader just wanted to punish the folks that tried to ignore him. The real villain was butterfly ballot that gave Buchanan enough Gore votes to swing FL. Gore's choice of Lieberman the scold probably lost more votes than Nader got.
All my opinion based on living through both elections and being particularly close to the 1992 race.

(9,535 posts)Another similar spoiler in reverse was billionaire Ross Perot, who leaned more conservative and pulled enough votes to give victory to Bill Clinton.
No way can a third party candidate win in today's environment where the nation is so polarized, and a candidate who would likely pull more votes from Democrats than Trump is the worst nightmare.
Someone should start a petition saying everyone will boycott Starbucks if he runs as an independent, and urge him to either stay out of the race, or run in one of the two mainstream political parties.
If he wants to run in a primary as a Dem like everyone else, I'd have no objections but don't think he'd have a chance against the seasoned field of strong contenders. If he or some other rich businessman ran as a rethug (doubtful given his ideology) he might actually pull some votes away from Trump voters who liked the idea of voting for a business mogul.

(570 posts)I want someone qualified in the White House next time. Someone with experience in how Washington works. Someone who can navigate the halls of Congress and not surround herself with crooks, criminals and corruption.
This is government we're talking about, not a board room. Two different things. If Schulz doesn't get that, he's unqualified to begin with. If he did get it, he wouldn't even be considering running. He's just one more self-absorbed, narcissistic, arrogant plutocrat who's hell-bent on bankrupting our country while lining his own pockets.
Schulz is joke!
