Trump Skeptical He Would Accept Any Congressional Border Deal

President Trump told the Wall Street Journal that he is doubtful Congress can come to a deal over border wall funding, adding that another government shutdown is “certainly an option.”

Said Trump: “I personally think it’s less than 50-50.”

Trump has suggested he’ll declare a national emergency to construct a wall along the southern border if Congress does not come to an agreement over the next three weeks.

legislation passed up to you from Congress or veto it. If you veto it, you run the big big risk that Congress is getting tired of your stupid games and override your veto anyways. It is looking more and more likely...

because if the answer is YES, they must pass the bill by the END OF THE WEEK.

POTUS has ~2 weeks to sit on a bill (which has passed both houses and been delivered to him) before it becomes law by default if not vetoed. So Trump can sit on it for a week and a half before vetoing it. This means if they wait until Feb 14 to pass a bill for which they'd be willing to over-ride a veto, Trump can simply choose not to act quickly and cause a ~2 week shutdown just out of spite.

And he's entirely capable if not likely of causing a 2nd shutdown out of spite.

If they are totally unwilling to ever consider over-riding a Trump veto, even on a shutdown, then the point is of course moot -- which I suspect it is. But if they are serious about avoiding another shutdown (spoiler: they're not), they need to be proactive, because they cannot count on a timely veto from Trump once he learns he can pull this maneuver.

They will face decades of rejection from the American people when they vote. Offer him nothing, he's about to resign, and this national emergency called trump will soon be over. He's desperate now for anything.
