55 percent oppose impeachment proceedings against Trump: poll

BY BRETT SAMUELS - 01/28/19 08:19 AM EST

A majority of Americans oppose Congress launching impeachment proceedings against President Trump, according to a survey published Sunday.

An ABC News-Washington Post survey found that 55 percent of Americans oppose beginning impeachment proceedings, compared to 40 percent who would support the move. Those figures differ from an August survey, which showed 49 percent backed impeachment proceedings.

The polled showed a double-digit decline in the number of Democrats who would back the move.

Of those that identified as Democrats, 64 percent support launching impeachment proceedings, down from 75 percent in August. Just 7 percent of Republicans support impeachment proceedings, and 42 percent of independents said the same.

The poll surveyed 1,001 people from Jan. 21-24 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Impeachment in the House is a cinch. That can be had in an instant. All Pelosi and Nadler have to do is snap their fingers.

However, to have even a ghost of a chance for conviction in the Senate, where an actual trial is held, incredibly solid evidence would be needed. This can only be provided by Mueller's full findings, because what is now out there will not suffice to get even 50 Senate votes for conviction, let alone 67. Pelosi and Jerry are two of the smartest people in the House. If the timing looks good, I'm sure they'll see it before any of the rest of us do.

I've noticed that majority of the polling is telling me bullshit, especially about t-rump.

He is hated by the majority, and the majority want him gone from our government. Majority want him in jail.

That's a fact, Jack.

Truly, if there was ever such a thing this moron should be impeached.

However, because people are dumb as fuck, there has to be a process to get enough of them there to support it as a country.

The issue is that Rs completely stonewalled the first two years of his presidency, and literally provided ZERO oversight on him.

So the process will have to start from scratch.

To your point there will have to be a number of investigations in the House that show some pretty horrible stuff, which have not even started yet and won't get there until summer at best. It will be a process switching over to impeachment, and congress only has so much time in session, and there are other things they have to focus on other than this - moving into 2020, and the full re-election cycle.

I know people won't want to hear there, but the Rs ARE going to scream you can't impeach during the election year for POTUS. Yes, bullshit, but it will be something that media and country at large indulges.

Congress did not get around to the impeachment process with Nixon until his second term - hell, he won by a massive landslide. And, you did not have Fox News and the conservative media machine, the country as not as stone cold stupid as it is now, and this is 100 times more involved and complex.

Its not going to happen.

Trump running for a second term while the extent of his crimes are brought to light and he is being impeached.
Rs running while supporting a clearly criminal President. Bring it on.

Nixon was being impeached for fixing his second election. That is where the crimes happened, Trumps crime happened from his campaign as well.

...including but not limited to:

-Figuring Mueller's investigation will take care of a lot of what needs to be taken care of.
-Knowing that Republicans won't let it go through in the Senate so it won't actually have the impact that it needs to hav.
-Knowing that even if impeached he won't be removed from office.
-Not wanting any more of a circus than things already are.

Not saying I agree with any of it, but I can see this being what is going through people's heads when asked about this subject.

But, the country is so stupid at this point, and so relentlessly indulges right wing fuck wittery, it is almost hopeless.

Back in August Repubs still controlled the House, Senate, and White House. With Democrats now controlling the House, perhaps people feel more reassured that investigations will continue, Mueller is less likely to be fired, etc. Trump is much more effectively corralled.

I believe that many of the same people who say they don’t support starting impeachment proceedings at this time will definitely not be opposed to starting them once solid evidence of Trump’s crimes is laid bare by the investigations.

The hard evidence is not available test, and there’s been no change in the willingness of the Senate to convict.

Every one knows he’s crude, but that’s not impeachable. A formal impeachment hearing will separate fact from fiction and lay out in a logical manner which impeachable crimes have been committed. At that point, public opinion will change.

Remember also, the Mueller report is only
Looking at one aspect of trum’s crimes (Russia). It’s an important one but not the only one.

Fortunately, we also have time to do it. The evidence for impeachment is piling up, and we need to get over our reticence to repeat ourselves. Too often, we figure if we lay out our argument once, it's overwhelming power to persuade is sufficient to rally all right-thinking people to our side. But this poll shows, once again, that a lot of our fellow citizens aren't paying very close attention. That means it's up to us to make the case for impeachment. And do it again and again. You think the chucktodds are going to do the heavy lifting for us? Hah!
