General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI say Republicans have an ADDICTION to Right wing news.
And I use that term ADDICTION purposely.
I say Republicans can not go a day, not a few hours even, without having to consume more right wing news.
Yes Fox News, yes Breitbart and Drudge and Gateway Pundit and all the hundreds (perchance thousands?) Of like minded 'News' Blogs.
Every week, a couple of times a week these days, I see that Old School Newspapers are having to let wonderful journalists go, cause they can't pay them. But I see more and more Right wing news blogs started staffed not by journalists but by party hacks. The stories they present are laughable, yet these number of these 'news' blogs multiply like rats. And none of these people are being laid off, just the opposite.
But it's not just TV news and internet news sites, it's facebook memes and stories. Passed around by Republicans to each other.
I see Republicans having to consume this slanted news, these implausible stories, not for enlightenment but because consuming this stuff makes them feel good and to feel better about themselves.
It's an ADDICTION. It's a powerful ADDICTION, and I wish we could start calling out this ADDICTION loudly, and repetitively.

(2,807 posts)Its an ADDICTION.
And nearly impossible to overcome alone.
I'm being serious. A treatment protocol would be a big help to America.
Not to mention,

(3,335 posts)I know I am. I rarely go a day without checking DU, and I hardly miss an episode of Rachel.
I think the disconnect is that they ONLY consume right-wing news, which feeds into their ignorance more than anything.

(2,807 posts)The point I was trying to make.
Thank you.

(7,530 posts)Waves to the group.
My TV rarely leaves MSNBC, I only watch in the evening to get the good stuff, and my DVR is set to record the latest Rachel Maddow daily.
Sometimes when I can't get enough here I turn to Reddit.
Someone hold me.

(86,742 posts)and a political scientist of sorts and I spend a lot of my time engaged in paying attention. The difference, I suppose, is that I don't function out of fear and anger and I try to analyze anything I might need to respond to before jumping to conclusions or simply accepting what someone else is promoting.
You're quite right about ignorance being the problem because fear is more prevalent among the less informed who usually are less inclined to seek info outside their immediate feed. That's how FB mastered the social manipulation game.

(100,097 posts)They will get louder and crazier. And yes, they are addicted to their side of the news. So much that they have a 24/7 network dedicated to it, and now they are literally talking to the president directly.

(2,807 posts)Massive propaganda, as well funded and designed as any propaganda in history.
But what REALLY unsettled me, is that the users demand the propaganda and want more and stronger propaganda.
I do not know of any other bunch who seek to propagandize themselves.

(6,377 posts)Fox, Breitbart, etc both push fear and anger nonstop, making it easy for viewers who agree with what they're saying to get addicted.

(2,807 posts)Let's start calling it what it is, ADDICTION.
I think it most important to use that label. And I don't know of anybody who does currently use that label.

(10,434 posts)I read somewhere, I think in one of David Brock's books, "Blinded By the Right" or "Right Wing Noise Machine", how the Fox"news" Sewer is deliberately designed to catch & hold your attention, then program directly to the subconscious. It's more than just the standard blonde in a short skirt, or the millions of dollars worth of lip gloss they buy each year. When Fox was started, they actually studied MTV to learn how to grab and keep eyeballs. Bright colors, frequent camera cuts, movement, music, loud, etc. All designed to hook the viewer.
For a long time I have changed the channel on any public TV, usually at the gym or restaurant, when it is on Fox. At the Y, there was one particular guy who would always put Fox on, then spend 60-90 minutes hogging the Smith Machine right in front of that tv. Even after finally moving on to something else, he would literally get antsy if Fox wasn't on the TV. One time, after he complained that he couldn't have Fox on all the time, I told him no one cared about his addiction, the rest of the room was sick of seeing that crap all the time. He actually said 'I don't have to watch it, I just want to'. After I stopped laughing, I said 'yeah that's what every addict says, let me guess, you can stop any time you want, right?'. I finally had to set a parental lock to keep him from putting fox back on the tv and he spent 3 weeks whining and blubbering about it.
I've observed a lot of these people. They will look at the TV and if the channel has been changed they actually seem to get withdrawal. Even when they move on to something else in the gym, they'll look at the tv from time to time to get a fix.

(58,724 posts)Sometimes I feel like I am addicted to some of those evening shows on MSNBC.
Saboburns
(2,807 posts)But I'm not aware of many left wing news sites.
MSNBC is not a left wing news site. It's just that compared to Fox News it is misnamed that. Just because something is in direct contrast to Right-wing news does not make it left wing news.
CNN is not left wing news. It's just that's it's not right wing news. NY TIMES AND WASHINGTON POST are not left wing news.
Again, I am not aware of many left wing news sites. Right wing sites have made it appear that these treasured news sites lean left. They sure claim they do. They do not.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Maddow and O'Donnell?
Saboburns
(2,807 posts)Undoubtedly left leaning. Maybe more anti right-wing than anything.
And most of the early and mid-afternoon shows too are the polar opposite of right-wing.
But I don't see any calling for left-wing causes. None. Nada. Zilch.
Rachel Maddow isn't advocating for a planned economy, O'Donnell isn't crying out for a General strike. Nobody on MSNBC argues for Unions. There's no great call for Socialized health care. There aren't any Communists on TV that I see, evening time or not. Nobody wants to Nationalize the energy companies.
So I say that those evening show that you mention are anti right-wing news.
But they are NOT left-wing.
And again I'll say that I am not aware of many left-wing news sites.

(58,724 posts)Anti right-wing would be a better descriptor to use.
