General Discussion

1. The Republican Party needs to die. A party that's eagerly embraced racism, sexism, fascism, knownothingism and treason isn't fit to run a 7-11, let a country.
2. The Electoral College has to go. People in small or sparsely populated states may be splendid folks, but not so splendid they deserve more political power than people in big, heavily populated states.
3. It should be made impossible to play games of chicken with government funding or the debt ceiling.
4. The filibuster is nearly dead already. Finish it off.
5. The Supreme Court needs to be turned back into a deliberative body instead of a 9-member legislature like it's becoming. I don't even know how to make that happen.
6. Commercial speech needs to be more regulated. Again, I'm not sure how, but I don't see democracy thriving where deep-pockets companies can turn firehoses of mendacity on any target at will.

(18,641 posts)The Citizens United decision didn't create the impression of corruption, it has enabled and encouraged full force corruption of our entire democratic system.
The fact that McConnell is able to get millions of dollars legally funneled from the Kremlin into his campaign by a Russian oligarch with American citizenship is a clear example of the abject corruption that has been created by this debauched law.

(53,410 posts)1. Presidents must have their powers very carefully delineated as well as making crimes very clearly described.
2. The government may never be shut down for any reason whatsoever. PERIOD. WTF could possibly be a reason to do so? And if there might be a reason, then make that reason crystal clear, and defined in great detail. Frankly, I dont think there is any reason. Certainly not because some fucking asshole is having a strutting, chest thumpimg macho fit!
3. Extensive psychological testing must be required for all elected officials when they take office and every five years thereafter. The President should undergo this testing every year.
4. All appointed cabinet members and Presidential staff must undergo deep FBI background checks. Criminals will not be allowed to serve.
The honest ones will comply. The crooks will stay away.

(32,764 posts)... but we need these things codified as laws. We can no longer assume that stuff is gonna happen just because it should happen. Even if the Republican Party really does go away, there will still be rightwingers in our midst. There will still be people with way too much money and who'll be willing to spend it to get what they want.
In the last couple of years I've learned that the real problem with the Republican Party is the Libertarians. If we could somehow get rid of them, everything else would fall into place eventually.

(31,261 posts)policy issues cause them to savage eachother. We should have our vigorous primary with all views being aired out. But candidates in the primary must show respect for the process and not go around making wild accusations of corruption that is just a made up fantasy. Once our nominee has emerged, we ALL need to support that person, doing any thing else keeps the Republican Party alive.
