(46,347 posts)Seriously, I did because we were one block inside the limit of the school buses.
So I walked or rode bicycle a mile to school, spring, summer fall and winter.
On days like today, school would close.
Just too dangerous.
And this was over 40 years ago, when "Kidz wuz tuffer!"

(34,661 posts)As someone who drove School Bus Part time for many a year in the Great State of Minnesota, were the children are seasoned to the climate. Yes,I had the misfortune of a Mechanical Breakdown on a Morning much like today . Radiator Hose blew and my coolant was gone in seconds. Oh did I mention it was -18 degrees and a nasty wind out of the Northwest . Had 60+ elementary little one's on board and no Radio or phone, talk about a situation that could have gone down hill darn fast. First of all,School Buses are just a tin can on wheels with a motor and no insulation to speak of. And when you lose your heat source, you only have minutes to find shelter for your Riders.
So if this stupid Governor thinks Kids are wimps and should buck it up,well,it does not work that way. Frost bite is for ever, and the scares never leave, got plenty of those scares. And will School Budgets decimated by the Righteous Conservative Movement, well, there are twenty or thirty times the walkers to school than at the time I was a Bus Driver. Our Kids had to walk six blocks to Elementary School because the Bus Zone was 7-8 blocks at the time, but when the brutal weather hit,our neighborhood organized transportation for all the Walker Kids . And that was 50 years ago.
Back to my Bus load of Kiddies,I was able to run to a near by Business and have the Lady at the front desk call the local PD . With the help of the Receptionist we were able to get all the Kids in the shelter of that Business. BTW,it took more than three hours before another Bus could be started and brought to where I have the Kids in safe keeping. Can not imagine doing something like this on a Rural Bus Route under the same conditions.
Oh btw, then one has to endure a critical incident action report by the School District as well as the Local PD and that is never a fun thing. All in a day of Winter Time work a day world.

(22,153 posts)Here in Kentucky today, the high will be 14, with windchill way below that.
When I went out to feed critters this morning, and take them warm water, I was dressed like the kid in a Xmas Story, preparing to go on extended deep sea diving. I can't imagine expecting kids to get out in this, especially little ones.
