Earlier in the month Alaska Airlines needed to bump a passenger from first class on a New York JFK to San Francisco flight for a pilot traveling to a duty assignment. The passenger they downgraded to economy was John Kasich, who just finished serving 8 years as Governor of Ohio and who sought the Republican nomination for President in 2016.
Only Governor Kasich didnt leave the first class cabin, he sat down in another passengers seat instead.
Omg this is insane. Kasich was asked to move to premium from first class & took my seat instead. I volunteered to take a later flight instead of fighting. @alaskaairlines, your employees are the BEST, sweetest people. And thanks, airport employees, for working without pay today.

Passenger Julie Klausner agreed to take a later flight rather than engage the drama. Alaska Airlines reimbursed the cost of the margherita flatbread she purchased while waiting an extra four hours.
Its been reported that Kasich was asked to move to extra legroom coach (premium) and also to 12F which I dont think is an extra legroom seat on any Alaska aircraft (and we know that since this wasnt the last flight of the day on the route that the aircraft was an Airbus A320). Heres where he sat instead.

Thanks to all of your mentions-- from trolls and supporters alike-- I've raised and donated just under 3K this morning for Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio. I'll continue to donate one dollar for each hateful tweet I get going forward. Thank you, and John Kasich sucks.

Im not defending kasich at all, im just wondering why an airline would bump a passenger to coach so an employee could have first class.

(13,501 posts)economy sucks. The airlines KNOW economy sucks. Yet they keep making it suckier to nickel and dime us.
But if we want a pilot who is flying to duty to be relaxed and comfortable, they realize that putting them in those SUCKY seats, especially cross country, is putting his upcoming flight at a disadvantage.
We want pilots to be relaxed, well rested and well fed. NONE of that can happen in the economy cabin. We all know it.

(36,827 posts)Upgrade options are often dependent on the seat not being used for other purposes. Aircrew on the job are always going to take priority over someone who isn't paying for the seat. If Kasich wanted to be guaranteed first class, he should have paid for it.

Not defending Kasich, but it seems if a pilot or other airline crew needed to get on a flight they should take whatever seat is available.

(4,613 posts)If I pay for a seat in first class, even Alaska's crappy first class, that's where I expect to sit. Not premium economy or they had damn well better refund the FULL price of my ticket and give me the step-down seat for free.

(959 posts)Or at least that's what a lot of the replies to this thread imply.
I don't care who it is, its wrong. The pilot could have taken the open non booked seat, or sat in jump-seat. Alaska Airlines caused this crapfest.

Such a big baby and also, a pathetic showing to those others on the ground and in the aircraft of just what kind of a person you really are.
Alaska Air and Ms. Klausner both deserve a big round of applause for their excellent manner of treating fellow human beings.

He's much more like Trump than he would ever admit, and would be royally PISSED if anyone ever told him so.
He won twice because Ted Strickland treated him with kid gloves in 2010, and because the Dems found the lamest candidate possible to run against him in 2014.
Kasich would have been destroyed by someone like Sherrod Brown running against him.

(15,696 posts)Chances are that priority seating is part of the benefits package airline pilots get. If you've ever been stuck in an airport, waiting for your flight crew to arrive, you might appreciate the "perks" pilots get.
And don't forget: benefits were originally designed to save company cash reserves; thus, Lower salaries didn't seem so bad to workers.

The other passenger shouldn't have been bumped either.
This sounds like the airline's fault. They didn't deliver what the customer paid for.

(15,090 posts)Or did he get upgraded because hes a frequent flyer? I sometimes fly first class because I have status with Delta and get upgraded.
fescuerescue
(4,448 posts)Paid first class is the #1 best revenue and profit for the airline.
When they start bumping FC passengers, they start with non-revenue passengers and work their way upwards, with full-fare FC being absolutely last.
FC is full of paid full-fare is a rare thing, but it happens. In those cases, about the only way someone would be bumped would be for an air marshal, and he will be on the plane first before any passengers, and the passenger that got bumped would be treated with a very healthy compensation before he got on the plane.

because he shouldn't have given up his first-class seat if it was not his intent to leave first class.
The pilot was traveling on airline business at no cost to the airline: if anyone had to be bumped to coach, it should been from business class.

(33,643 posts)If Kasich indeed paid for his 1st Class seat, then the airline really maybe should've done things differently WRT to the Pilot and the Comedienne.
If he did NOT, and the 1st Class seat was in some way a free upgrade from Premium, then Kasich was being a dick.
Although the fact is, the Comedienne apparently graciously accepted a later flight in order to not cause a fuss, and was not actually upset ... so that kinda suggests the Airline handled things pretty well.
Can we all stipulate to that? Facts/Reality are important, IMHO.
NEOBuckeye

(34,092 posts)1. Pilots heading to their next flight must fly first class - to ensure timely deboarding to arrive at their next flight in a timely manner
2. If there are no vacant 1st class seats, the person who paid least for their first class seat is bumped to coach
3. Apparentlym(since Kasich was reassinged to coach) he was the one on this flight who had paid the least.
4. Instead of going to his reassigned seat, Kasich merely plopped himself down in someone else's seat and refused to move.
I haven't found indepemdent confirmation of the rules - but they make sense, since the next plane cannot take off without a pilot - and there are some very tight timings regarding how long pilots can be on duty. A time-out on a pilot can have significant ripple effects.
rocktivity

LET them deboard first regardless of where they sit -- including the cockpit if there's enough seating, or with the rest of the flight crew.
If those are the rules, Kasich should not have been allowed to take another first-class seat. But by the same token, it's stupid to bump your highest-paying customers.
rocktivity
Ms. Toad
(34,092 posts)He just plopped himself down there and refused to move. (His new assigned seats was in premium)
The practice may be stupid, but it isn't likely called into ay very often, since I don't think 1st class fills up that often.

the airline should have had him RE-moved.
Suppose they hadn't "gotten lucky" that the owner of the seat he took agreed to take a later flight?
rocktivity
Ms. Toad
(34,092 posts)Which is part of her spiel.
They had numerous airline employees on board to explain to Kasich that he had to move, and he was getting.rudrer, and more volatile,.so ultimately the owner volunteered to take a later flight to make life easier for everyone. (And also because she had no interest in being trapped in a flying tube with someone who was that angry about.being forced to sit outside of first class.

(622 posts)Why is the pilots itinerary more important than Kasichs?
localroger
(3,631 posts)So he didn't pay for the first-class seat. It's also nearly certain that the person whose seat he took wasn't paying either, since she doesn't mention being offered a voucher for her trouble. I have been bumped from both first-class and from the desirable legroom exit row at the last minute; in the exit row case the person who ended up sitting next to my wife instead of me was a survivor of the Virginia Tech shooting, which had happened less than a week before.
So this is a basic dick move by Kasich, who broke the law by not complying with flight crew instructions. It's quite likely they would have given him an upgrade for the later flight if he asked but Ms Klausner took the hit so the Very Important Prick could get home on time and in comfort. I'm sure she considers it worthwhile since she can milk this story for its comedy gold potential for years.

(2,117 posts)Whether he paid for the seat or it was a free upgrade, it was his seat. You don't give someone something and then try to take it back because you want to give it to one of your people. I wouldn't move either.
