Roger stone is a perfect example of this.

A Narcissist who believes he is smarter than everybody and is never wrong, which leads to their self destruction.

Stone had known for at least 6 months he was going to be indicted. He kept all of his computers and cell phones. How dumb can you get?

I believe Stone decided (he is never wrong) Mueller would call him or his lawyers and ask them to report to the court house to be indicted. He decided Mueller would not raid his home and he is never wrong.

Stone and Trump are two of a kind. They are going down, it's just a matter of time.

But the real test of his intelligence will be if he said or wrote anything incriminating in the first place

He wasn't charged with anything. He could have destroy what ever he wanted. It's his property. He could say it broke so I threw it away. How would they even know if he threw anything away?

And with anything digital, there are plenty of ways to figure out if someone was deleting stuff they shouldn't have (backups, recipients, cc's, bcc's, cloud, caches, undelete, etc etc)
