When this became public I was sickened. She apologized and I have moved past her 'past' (somewhat). That's my prerogative. I think in light of the current events in VA, we all need to allow fellow Democrats the space to move past... But Northam needs to go! (Sorry for what might be considered a thread jack. I think the comparison is apt.)

it's easy to point out the many differences between our civil war and WWII, the Germans have accepted the shame of the Reich.

We have not accepted the shame of the Confederacy, but defend and praise it.

I can take you to the grave in GA of my Confederate great great grandfather. I am not ashamed or proud of him. I do not know his circumstances. He may have been incredibly poor, no one in that family ever had much money. I would never consider honoring that flag. And frankly I am sick of the generalizations about the South. Please remember there are normal liberal Democratic white people here. And we do not appreciate the racist and traitor labels.

Same here. It's 2019 but some still look on white southerners as plantation owners.

So I'm thinking on selling my plantation!

(Don't be offended, my black roommate told me to say that.)

Nah, just kidding. They don't allow blacks in my apartment building.

If someone wants to call McTurtle a stupid traitor redneck loser I'm all in, he's a stupid traitor redneck loser. But the attitude that everyone in the south falls into that same category are hurtful and only tend to distance people who might otherwise learn to see things from a more liberal point of view.

(which I know is not Deep South but was a border state) who ran for office as Lincoln Republicans and fought for equal rights back in the 30's.

They were proud to live in a house that was reputed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad.

"The South" is not a monolith, especially these days, and open racism is no longer appreciated in many parts. But there are still too many loud voices trying to keep the hate alive, one way or another.

We need louder voices.

And the fact that you don't see pickups everywhere with racist symbols in New England, on the west coast, etc. So, generalizations can be made. I don't take offense about it because I hate these yahoo racists as much as anyone here.

Of course there are pockets of very liberal, intelligent people in the South. And we southern libs tend to be even more fervent politically than the rest of the country. There are many of us here on DU since we require such havens because of our closeted status here in R-land.

Yes, I also don't like people assuming that we're a homogeneous, inbred, ignorant racist block. But I think most DUers know we're not. Besides, I also trash southern racists all the time myself.

(And, btw, this closeted atheist hates those 60' crosses stuck on hills everywhere too.)

And my comments were directed more at individuals than entire states. And why do I have a feeling that if I were to drive through Kentucky tomorrow I'd see a fair number of Confederate flags?

Don't know about Ohio, but I have been in Nazi/Klan areas of NY and PA. Scary stuff at times.

I suspect they are losers whose only concept of self-worth comes from the acceptance of their lowlife comrades. The King Rat is still a rat, though. And a cornered rat is nasty.

a Star on the confederate battle rag. Having spent a good portion of my life in Kentucky I can attest to the fact that a large percentage of Kentuckians are indeed racist. That includes my Mother, my Sisters and Brother. Once you get out of the major urban areas its still the 1800's here in large part.

…. I've come to the conclusion that Mr. Lincoln made a terrible mistake by not prosecuting the confederate leadership for treason. Allowing Davis and his cabinet AND the Generals/higher military ranks to get off practically scot free gave the southern revisionists an opportunity to make the narrative fit THEIR agenda. We still see the results to this very day. " The War Against Northern Aggression", "The War for States' Rights", "The War to Suppress Yankee Arrogance", "The Second American Revolution" are what people outside the metro centers in Kentucky learned to call the Civil War.

Mitch just barely survived his last re-election campaign, lets hope he doesn't do as well for his next one.

Racism.
Specifically translated: "we're white, we're racist and we're proud of it/stick that in your liberal asses."

If Northam needs to go, so does Mitch! But can you imagine any other southern states asking him to resign? Nope.
Virginia now would, I think.
