Progressives gather in Pittsburgh to cement gains

At a gathering of progressives in Pittsburgh on Saturday, a straw ballot anointed California Sen. Kamala Harris the front-runner in the 2020 presidential field.

At the second day of the convention at a South Side union hall, grassroots organizers broke out into sessions to discuss the progressive policy agenda and how to carry it into electoral and legislative victories -- a first look at a key voting bloc ahead of municipal elections this year and the presidential contest in 2020.

Addressing inequality was one of the top priorities that attendees listed on sticky notes posted on boards around the hall. The next president, they wrote, should also focus on universal health care, canceling student debt and a "green, equitable America for all."

What they don't want in the next president, many wrote, is a billionaire.
