I will never understand why this has not happened. The Democrats and the news media should have been calling for him to resign a long time ago.
Trump kidnapped thousands of babies. He has gotten people killed including children. He sides with Putin over America and no one has called for him to resign. The entire nation just sits back and waits, watching a lunatic destroy our country. Trump is clearly unfit and mentally ill.
We may regret this unbelievable apathy.

(18,964 posts)I think the reason there is no wide-spread movement to get Trump to resign is because we know that the next in succession is Pence...who...
is probably smarter than Trump but even more committed to an obnoxious conservative agenda than Trump is even on his worst days.
In a sense...Pence is Trump's insurance policy against either resignation or impeachment.

(10,024 posts)Trump has decimated norms, alienated allies, supported Putin in his efforts to undermine the West, further destabilized the Middle East by pulling out of the Iran agreement and by refusing to hold Saudi Arabias Prince Mohammed accountable for the Khashoggi murder, started a seemingly unending tariff war, and caused the standing of the US in the world to decline significantly. Yes, Pence would be a sneaky SOB appointing right-wing judges, leaving corrupt officials in place, and in general undermining civil rights. But I think he would be less confrontational on foreign policy and less likely to continue alienating allies and threatening to pull out of NATO. I dont think he has the same ties to Russia as Trump, so he would most likely not do Putins bidding.
Once Trump is gone and Democrats have control, for which I fervently hope in 2020, many of the problems Trump has caused in this country can be addressed and change can begin. But once the US has lost its world leadership role and the trust of other nations, it will be difficult to gain it back. Trump is doing enough damage in this country, but he is doing far more damage, perhaps irreversible, to the US role in the global sphere.

The only exception is that the turn-around might happen very quickly with the election of a Democratic President and Legislature.

The first to jump on the Republican hay wagon...those are followers, not leaders. I'm looking for the Democratic politicians who struggle with that decision. That's a leader. Someone who is weighing the bad with the good, recognizing the good, recognizing legal elections by voters, but recognizing the bad...it's not a slam dunk all the time. Regardless of what answer a politician comes to, it should not be a knee jerk jump on the bandwagon, IMO.

(12,558 posts)The treaty was flawed in that China wasnt included. So China has been able to advance their programs and weaponry while we've been retracted by the treaty. China wants to dominate the world. Read "The world, by China" from the NYT. Shows the spread of their influence as ours wanes. World society abhors a power vacuum. If we leave an area, either Russia or china is going to fill it. That the reality of the world.
The only way to keep China from leaving us in the dust is to drop that treaty.
EX500rider
(10,849 posts)The Trump administration says that a new Russian missile, designated the 9M729 and known to Nato as the SSC-8, breaches the INF Treaty. Back in December, Mr Pompeo gave Russian President Vladimir Putin 60 days to return to compliance or the US would also cease to honour its terms.
This, by the way, is not a new idea raised by the Trump administration. President Barack Obama too was concerned about what the Russians were doing.
The evidence has been put to Washington's Nato allies and they have all backed the US case.
The Russian countered with the silly argument:
However, Russian officials kept arguing that the American decision to deploy the missile defense system in Europe is a violation of the treaty. Russian experts also stated that the US usage of unmanned aerial vehicles such as the MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-4 also violates the INF Treaty.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46510957
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermediate-Range_Nuclear_Forces_Treaty#Alleged_violations
I also agree that the Chinese not being part of the treaty was a bad idea (maybe not so much at the time but they have been pumping out IRBM since then)
But there is a strong sentiment in both the Pentagon and White House that the agreement is out of date. US officials point to China's huge arsenal of intermediate-range nuclear missiles, which it has been able to develop unconstrained by any treaty.
Also Russian military journals have had some disturbing articles, hypothetical plans to use tactical nukes on NATO forces during a war with the theory that that we can not reply in kind as we would have no tactical nukes and would not want to go to strategic nukes (ie, fire ICMB's at Russia) and would therefore have to withdraw/surrender.

(22,362 posts)any organizing effort, there's a critical mass that must be hit to overcome inertia. For Northam, his base and the party's base took the lead on calls for him to resign, with many allies supporting them. That carries a greater weight than opponents calling for a resignation. The first women's march was a big burst of energy that created a lot of sustained organization, but until Trump's base and allied supporters join in, it will be difficult if not impossible to pressure him to resign.
I think a lot of people on DU forget how many people there are in this country and how few of them are political active, and how few Americans feel they can make a difference. Building solidarity is a long, slow slog, and organizing for action is a full-time job.
The implication that focusing on Northam somehow takes efforts away from getting Trump out of office or make it harder to do so is offensive and wrong, of course.

(146,318 posts)They are supposed to report the news. Some even do report the news without taking positions on it.
Editorial writers, on the other hand, get paid to take positions. Many of those have called for Trump's resignation or even his impeachment and removal. So have some Democrats in Congress.
Maybe you need to read more widely. I don't know.
I realize that you're really talking about Ralph Northam. That's a very different situation.
shockey80
(4,379 posts)That is a small number. Every major news organization should be calling for his resignation because of the crimes we have all witnessed and because he is mentally ill and a traitor. He puts Putin first. The democrats in congress should have been doing the same thing.
People here on DU are among the few people in this country who are responding correctly to this madness.

Ignorant, stupid voters got us into this mess, and it will be up to sensible, informed voters in 2020 to turn things around. The Democrats need to focus on finding the most electable common sense no b.s. candidate and setting that person loose on the mission of crushing the orange monster.

(9,688 posts)I also have high hopes that the House Democrats - especially the judicial and intelligence committees - can lay the groundwork for his ouster and that they will do everything possible to be sure that (a) Mueller completes his investigation and (b) that Mueller's report is released to the public. [Just saw a quote from Trump's Feb 3 interview (which I could not bear to watch) that suggests that he may not allow the report to be released, which got me worried about this issue all over again].

I know it is sad, and it does make me angry, but Northam is one of us, and we STILL have to try and do the right thing, no matter what Trump and the Republicans do or don't do.
First, Northam cannot be equated with Franken. The two cases are very different. While the right wing brought out these 'revelations' in both cases, Northam SHOULD have known better, by his mid twenties, to EVER pose for a picture in black face and kkk regalia. Even clear back in '84 that wasn't OK.
No, he betrayed the trust of those who voted for him. It would be best if he resigned, and his resignation will not hurt our party.

(401 posts)Its the job of the press to REPORT the need, not BE the news.
In my mind the reporting has been on- target but we havent reached a critical mass to inspire a demand for change.
With the mid-terms over, I expect hell decide not to run for re-election and that will further reduce the public interest in resignation or removal sort of a just let it fade away sentiment
The only thing that will change the apathy level is a scathing mueller report that cant be denied or explained away.
