It was around 1962 and I was a white kid in a white grade school. There was a talent show and I did a stage act in blackface, in a pair of overalls and a raggedy straw hat. I had a little wooden nail keg that my dad had chalked "Cotton Gin, XXX". I put my foot up on the keg and sang Swing Low Sweet Chariot in my best deep and throaty "Negro voice". I remember having a vague feeling that it was not ok, but I was told it was going to be great and that people would love me, so I just went out there and did my best.
Today, I am only glad that there were no black people in the audience. But there were others in the audience and some of them are still alive, and some of them may even have a memory of that white kid in black face standing under the lights making an ass of himself, his family, and his community. It may even be remembered as an example of the depth of racism in this country. Well, that was me, and I'm sorry.
My age at the time and the era of it might excuse me, but I know that I sought applause and approval from strangers by portraying a degrading stereotype of the most oppressed people in my world. It has been among my regrets for many years. It wasn't funny then, and its not funny now. It is all just pain.
... and one of the reasons I won't be running for governor.

Is that some kind of witty sarcasm?
becasue if it is, and if you are trying to be cute, it isn't funny
What is interesting is how you don't seem to participate in many discussions here
Triloon
(506 posts)that Gov Northam could perhaps examine his own thoughts and feelings about blackface a little further. Not being cute, just connecting my statement to the current events.
Yeah, I don't participate here very much, though I keep a DU tab open all day long. I'm a radical left activist and a yellow dog dem voter, for 50 years. Often I feel that my input would not be welcome here. So I don't expose myself to the pointless criticism of my often opaque remarks. I presume that's ok with you?

(92,268 posts)in the OP could have various connotations unless clarified
as is:
"radical left activist and a yellow dog"
I don't even know what that means, because yellow dog itself has many connotations
Triloon
(506 posts)as in, "I'd vote for a yellow dog as long as it was a democrat." Meaning, I never vote outside the party. So, as a leftist I do find myself voting for a fair amount of yellow dogs, ie., marginally acceptable candidates whose best feature is that they arent Republicans. I only mentioned this because you seemed to be questioning my credentials for being on DU. Why did you do that?

for sharing that memory. This is something a fine future Governor would say.

(67,809 posts)The kind of show there blackface used to be a part of it for some people. I don't recall any debate on the matter, but there was no blackface. Never even discussed by Cub Pack leadership. My mom was a den mother. I recall zero discussion around it. It was simply to be kids singing songs on stage.
Our neighborhood was both racially and ethnically diverse. While Italians were the largest group, they were not the majority. There was a sizeable AA population, among others. It was pretty much a scale model UN population. We all got along for the most part. I recall inter-neighborhood dustups, but never any ethnic or racial issues.
