A step-by-step guide to what happens if Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam steps down

Please note the same group who published the picture of Northam has publish the story about the Fairfax accusation of sexual assault-Big League Politics

"Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax would be elevated to governor. He would become the second black governor in the state’s history. (Should Fairfax for some reason not be able to serve, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is next in line. Fairfax has notably been forced in the past 24 hours to issue a statement rebutting sexual assault rumors.)
There would not be a special election to replace Northam. Fairfax would serve the rest of the governor’s current term, through 2021.
A special election to replace Fairfax as lieutenant governor could be called, though it is not guaranteed. Fairfax may appoint his own replacement, Sabato said, but the state legislature could mandate that a special lieutenant governor election be held in November, when many of the state legislative seats are on the ballot."

Means that the GOP gets a do-over for both Lt Governor AND the AG for 2018 elections... the AG being the first line of defense against the Trump administration.

I await some story on AG Mark Herring to drop at this point, or just after he's sworn in.

a lose lose.

By taking out the Democratic Governor, Lt Governor, and AG, the GOP is in line to replace the Lt Gov and the AG one year into their terms.

I have to wonder if some story is waiting to drop on Herring once he's sworn in.

Yes, if Northam doesn't resign, that would indeed alienate the base, which is the lose if he stays - if he resigns, then the shuffle at the top begins, leaving the Lt gov and AG spots open with a GOP led legislature, which will do whatever they can to prevent a Democratic Governor from appointing anyone.

is any likelihood that that will happen.

If you want to speculate like that, you could say that could happen in any state in the country.

We could make the same argument about Trump - that we shouldn't push for impeachment or resignation because Pence will succeed him and the Republicans could then do something to get Pelosi out of the line of succession, putting Grassley next in line, followed by Pompeo and Mnuchin and the rest of Trump's cabinet.

I'm going to stay focused on what's actually happening and what's likely to happen, not what COULD happen in our wildest imaginations.

They want to take out Northam and Fairfax at once for the same reason that we want to take out Trump and Pence at once now. We have control of the House. If Nancy takes the Oval Office, the House will confirm any VP that she chooses.

The GOP controls the VA legislature. The VA legislature has the power to refuse to let Herring appoint a lt Governor, and AG, because they are all chosen by separate elections, and not appointed by the Governor.

The GOP gets another chance in a special election to get a GOP lt Governor, and a GOP AG.

that will do everything legal and not legal to prevent him from appointing Democratic replacements.

They interferred with the 2018 house elections, and they will do it again with any special elections.

Again - I think Northam should resign, despite the trap that has been laid by Brietbart. I'm just saying that it helps the GOP to get Northam out of office.

year which they can do...and then go after Fairfax if he is the governor. The only way to stop this is for Northam to refuse to resign. What have the Republicans to lose? They create chaos at a time when the legislature is up for grabs and take a shot at the governorships or at the least discrediting Democrats. Both the Northam pic and the Fairfax attack come from the same source...Big House Publishing. This is a hit job...which doesn't make me happy with Northam, but a resignation plays into the right wing rat fuckers hands.

The VA Democratic party and the VA Black Caucus has made it clear why he should resign, and the consequences if he doesn't. Northam will not be able to effectively lead without the support of VA Democrats - and that would indeed be a shit show.

I hate that the GOP set this trap, and I hate that it appears to be going their way.
